Hello, so I’m a student hoping to major in MT in college and I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me on how to weight my application list in terms of selectivity/if anyone had ideas as to where I should apply.
Here are my stats:
3.89 GPA unweighted 4.89 weighted
1450 SAT/31 ACT (these scores are without prep so I’m hoping to raise them a bit, probably with focus on SAT)
-selective public school in Chicago
-I’ve been in both my school’s play and musical in the past year and a musical over last summer. I was put into the special performance ensemble for a benefit for the summer musical.
-I’ve been in plenty of other shows and was also in Goodman Theater’s summer acting intensive in the summer before my freshman year. (Few recent leads which concerns me a lot!)
-I danced from ages 7-16 (not dancing now
Bc no time!)
-I’ve taken voice lessons for the past three years and recently I was selected to sing as a representative of private lessons (as a soloist) in the place I take voice lessons in spring benefit.
I’ve been accepted into a few summer intensives and Second City’s advanced acting program so that will be my summee add one.
Right now I’m thinking about applying to Illinois Wesleyan, NYU, Lawrence University, CCM, University of Illinois, umich (maybe), pace, Marymount manhattan, and maybe a few more. I was wondering if (based on my stats) this list was well-weighted and if I have a real chance at most/any of these schools.
I feel like a total narcissist posting this but I’m concerned and everyone on here seems to have a way better idea of what to do than I do.
Thank you and sorry this was so long
First, Musical Theatre is completely different than the rest of the majors on CC - there is no such thing as “chance me” here - sorry! There are some schools where your grades count, but by far the large majority are looking at your audition first and foremost, unless the school is non-audition - which you should have at least one on your list. Every school auditioning wants something different, and there is no way to know exactly what they are looking for in a specific year.
The most helpful place to start would be to read this recent thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1987210-what-musical-theatre-colleges-should-i-consider-p1.html, and specifically post #8 that includes a lot of basic information already written out for you.
The great news is that there is a ton of information available to you here on the MT forum, and lots of people willing to help you out when you have questions. Best of luck to you!
You have a great academic profile and it sounds like you have experience so on paper it looks great for the schools you’ve chosen. I would make your list a lot longer, and make sure you really like all the schools you apply to because with luck you will be accepted at a few of them. I know that sounds harsh but thousands audition for a few slots and if there is someone already in the program that looks or sings just like you, you may not be accepted even if you nail the audition. Look into Elon, Florida State, Boco, Point Park, Montclair State, The Hartt School, and some non audition schools such as Muhlenberg which would be a BA but is a great program and great with merit aid. Also don’t shy away from University of Michigan. Most of the programs are really small so they may only take 12 people in There are also acting programs that include singing and dance such as UNCSA. My other advice, which I did not do with both my daughters and regret, is get a coach such as MTCA and start your songs, monologues and prescreens now. Time flies during this process and if you don’t apply early you will get shut out of audition slots. I’m sure there are a lot of other schools such as in Chicago, Texas, etc that maybe someone who has applied to them can add to your list. My suggestions are based on my 2 daughters, one is a junior at NYU and the other at Marymount Manhattan starting this fall.
I agree with @samigaga - do not limit your list and do not limit your list to just BFA programs. These boards provide a lot of good insight on a lot of different programs - my D limited herself to only mid-atlantic area schools because she wanted to be in close proximity to NYC. Luckily she got into one of her top choices (by way of coming off the WL) -but in hindsight it would have been less stressful if she added more auditions. We did NOT do Unifieds - but there are a lot of folks that did walk ins and found programs they really liked, that were not even on their radar - and in hindsight (again!) - we should have. Other good schools not mentioned, UARTS, Shenandoah, Temple, Wagner. Your excellent grades can only help you - my D had to be accepted academically first to her school - they gave her a very nice (top scholarship) for academics and threw in some nice additional money for MT. It is an exciting time! Enjoy the process!!
