schools planning on applying to:
Cornell, uPenn, duke, john hopkins, Caltech, MIT (don't even know why...), and Carniege Mellon

don't have legacies to any....

do i even have a chance or is it even worth applying?? do you guys have any other recomendations for colleges strong in my major??

thanks in advance =)

MIT is a big reach and your ECs are a bit weak. This isn’t to say you have no chances, just that I think you need some safeties as well. Thus my advice is to update your application list.

Great GPA! But SAT is kind of low IMO. What are your safeties? Oh and are you a male or female? Race? It makes a difference for your major(s). Your EC’s could be stronger.

Cornell - reach
UPenn - match
Duke - match
John Hopkins - not sure
Caltech - reach
MIT - high reach (SAT I…)
Mellon - low reach

Chance back? : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/741629-chance-improvements-2011-urm.html

thanks so much guys…

jayay90- so i’m a female…and i’m not a minority, sooo no help there…
for ecs being stronger, i am a rising senior so, i don’t have much time to bring them up…

westhamunited32- why are duke and hopkins a match while mellon is a low reach??
also, how good is mellon as a school for a bio-related major?

thanks so much again =)

MIT, Caltech, UPENN, Duke.
MIT and Caltech are higher reaches, and UPENN and Duke are lower reaches.
JH,Cornell and Carnegie Mellon look to be general matches. Id say go for it, a decent shot at the majority. good SAT, great SAT II. You’re Ec’s seem to lack a general focus, Quantity > Quality. but the rest of the app seems to level that off. Write great essays, get excellent recs, and put in the full effort, and you’ll get accepted to at least 3 I say.

chance back.

hey thanks guys =) is there anything i can do to my ecs before this fall???

To comment on your previous question, it’s a bit late for ECs. If you take up more ECs, then colleges will notice that as senior padding. Better to stick with what you have and package them well in your essay, interview, and whatnot. I suggest using your time to raise your SAT scores over 2200 or even 2300. Ah, and don’t include the activities you’ve quit.

Cornell - reach
UPenn - high match
Duke - match
John Hopkins - mid reach
Caltech - reach
MIT - high reach
Mellon - dunno

Great GPA and SAT2. your ECs are lacking, but not as bad as some. Your SAT is a tad low. see if you can get it into the 2200s for those schools or try the ACT. if you cant, dont worry it will be a minor setback on your application, but not much more.
MIT and Caltech- highish reach
UPenn, Duke-reach
the rest: low reach

odds are you will get into one of these, but why not add some safeties and matches?

thanks guys =)
do you know of any other colleges that are good in bme/ biology in general???

Cornell-low reach
UPenn-low reach
Duke-low reach
john hopkins-match
Caltech-reach
MIT-reach
Carniege Mellon-match

is applying into bme at jhu harder than applying to jhu as any other major?
