- tufts creative writing professor submitted to my literary magazine.
- legacy @ georgetown.
- student at columbia involved in my literary magazine staff.
- sought out all-male a cappella groups from amherst and hopkins-- getting arrangements from them.
- getting lunch with uchicago creative writing professor when i visit the school.
- good relationship with alumni from cornell willing to write rec.

OKAY. so after all of that information (sorry!), here are the schools i'm very interested in:
brown ed
georgetown
amherst
johns hopkins
columbia
tufts
usc
northwestern
uchicago
cornell

and of course some safeties (perhaps suggest some more?):
american
kenyon
uconn
umiami

Your gpa is very low for the Ivies, and your test scores are kinda low (I’m pretty sure you’ll raise them though), but WOW your ECs are amazing. I think you will get into most of the schools, but they’re always unpredictable.

Your gpa/class rank aren’t setting you up well for junior year. As long as you do well in junior year though, your sophomore/freshman grades should be somewhat offset as it is the most important year by far. SATs also need work (try to aim for 2200+), but that’s not surprising given you took it as a soph. You don’t need to worry about ECs, they’re great. Just continue to grow what you have. And coming from a prep school will be advantageous. As long as you bring up your academics you should do well for all of your schools (considering connections).

Thanks so far guys! Shameless bump post :)

Would you please chance me?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1192613-chance-me-please-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Oh sorry, I thought I had! I will when I get home (I’m on my iPhone right now)

Oops you actually did. Sorry. :)

Just realized I got my Class Rank wrong! I am somewhere in the top 10 out of 85.

My initial reaction is that your GPA/Test scores are way low for Ivies, but your ECs are ridiculous, plain and simple.
Alright so lets just go down the list:

brown ed- low-mid reach
georgetown- low reach
amherst- dont know them well enough
johns hopkins- low-mid reach
columbia-mid reach
tufts- low-mid reach
usc- match
northwestern-high match-low reach
uchicago- low reach
cornell- high match-low reach

brown ed- Reach
georgetown- Low Reach
amherst- Reach
johns hopkins- Low/Mid-Reach
columbia- Reach
tufts- Low Reach
usc- Match
northwestern- High Match
uchicago- Low Reach
cornell- Low Reach

There’s still time to turn it around though! If you can really do well junior year you can probably get into those higher level schools! Good luck!

Thanks guys! Is that with or with out improving my GPA and SAT scores?

It’s rather difficult to judge since you’re just starting junior year, but you’re definitely on the right track.
Your ECs are outstanding, especially for someone so young. However, your SAT score and GPA need to be improved (but you already know that :)) if you’re shooting for the Ivies and any other institution of that caliber.
Try getting chanced at the start of senior year–that will probably give more accurate results.

brown ed- Reach
georgetown- Low Reach
amherst- Reach
johns hopkins- Mid Reach
columbia- Reach
tufts- High Match
usc- Match
northwestern- Low reach
uchicago- Low Reach
cornell- mid Reach

thanks so far guys! can anyone chance my ‘safeties’ and tell me if they are likelies (that’s what i’m going for… if they are likelies now, by the time i turn on the heat for my junior year i hope they’ll be at least quite likely matches). also, can someone chance me for oberlin and unc & berkeley (oos)–not safeties, i’m just curious? thanks guys!

so:
american
kenyon
uconn (in state)
umiami
oberlin
berkeley (oos)
unc (oos)

Wow, my jaw pretty much dropped at the ECs. At most Ivies, it’s kind of a crapshoot whether you get in or not. Although your GPA could be higher, I think out of the Ivies you’ll probably get into Georgetown and Amherst.
Good luck!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1200228-brown-smith-mcgill.html</a></p>

thanks! could someone chance the ‘new’ list haha?

bump10chars

As you know, your GPA/rank are not as high as they should be, but you still have junior year to turn that around, which you should be able to. I’m actually pretty impressed you managed to improve so much in just one year!

Your ECs are INTENSE!! Make sure to pick a couple to really focus on next year so hopefully you can get a leadership position, and also there is a limit to how many ECs you can include on the commonapp, this year it’s 10. Though you can always attach another sheet…

Also what is p, f and pwriting?

chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1198794-chance-me-please-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

p, f, and pwriting is me being lazy and wanting to type “poetry, fiction, and playwriting” haha

also can someone chance the other group?

american
kenyon
uconn (in state)
umiami
oberlin
berkeley (oos)
unc (oos)

You’ll walk right into your safeties, probably with massive merit aid. I think that Brown, Cornell and Columbia are reaches, but certainly not impossible. JHU, Amherst, UChicago and NW seem like slightly high matches. You should probably get into all of the others save for maybe one or two random rejections. You are in great position, and I wish you good luck. Chance back if you can at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1201569-chances-senior-will-chance-back.html</a></p>
