Chance me! (will chance back!)

Hey guys! I know it’s still kind of early to make this thread (middle of junior year), but I’m just really curious about my chances at these schools, now that I’ve started to pull up some of my stats (gpa, sat’s, etc). I apologize in advance that this is a novel-length post... I'm a wordy person. Basically, the details about me:

Caucasian male, attending prestigious private school in CT.
No financial aid necessary.

GPA:
~3.65 UW. I know it looks low, but it’s not bad for my school—I’m in the bottom of the top 10% of my class. But my school doesn’t technically rank, nor does it weigh GPAs.

Freshman Year:
Spanish 2H: B-, A
Algebra 2H: B-, B+
History: B, B+
English: B-, A-
Biology: B-, A
Wind Ensemble: A-, A-

Sophomore Year:
Spanish 3H: A-, A
English: A-, A
History: A, A-
Chemistry: A+, A-
Geo/Trig: A-, A-
Concert Choir: A, A-

Junior Year (as rigorous as it gets, except for Pre Calc):
Spanish 4H: A
English 11H: A-
AP US History: A
AP Environmental Science: A-
Pre Calculus: A+
Chamber Choir (select Concert Choir): B+ or A- (not sure)

Senior Year:
AP Modern Euro
AP Spanish
AP English
AP Statistics (perhaps)
Honors Physics
Chamber Choir

High Honors Society both semesters Sophomore Year, second semester of Freshman Year, and I will get it first semester of Junior Year (if I keep my grades where they are at the moment—which I will hopefully do).

Headmaster’s List (contributes most to overall classroom learning environment) both semesters Sophomore Year.

Inducted into foreign language honors society at the end of Sophomore Year.

SAT’s (based off practice tests from sat prep… still improving—especially math):
710 cr
670 m (EW. I know.)
780 w

Intended Major: Business/Economics and English (Creative Writing).

Extra Curriculars:

1) I founded a literary magazine at beginning of sophomore year that donates proceeds to an organization that works to alleviate child labor in third world countries. I remain the editor-in-chief, and I’ve expanded the project to include around 20 associate staff editors—the journal has attracted the writing of many impressive writers.

2) I am the runner-up for 2011 Elizabeth Bishop Prize in Verse sponsored by The Blue Pencil Online. I attended their inaugural ceremony to read my poem, which they published.

3) I received a gold key for five poems in the 2011 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

4) I am the Junior Editor of high school literary magazine, and will be Senior Editor next year. I was also a staff member Sophomore Year.

5) My writing has been featured in over 115 independently-owned publications (some are extremely selective); I have been featured on my school's website for my work with my literary magazine and publication pursuits, and I am being featured in school's annual report magazine this year.

6) I will graduate high school with a Concentration in Global Studies (will take a global service trip to China this summer, will be taking AP Spanish, will write a 20-page thesis analyzing a global issue).

7) Bass/Baritone in my all-male a cappella group at high school starting Sophomore Year; won 3rd place in all-state a cappella championship Sophomore Year. I am Vice President of the group, as of my Junior Year.

8) I played piano in the Young Musician's Festival (competitive musician program in March every year) in Freshman Year--Intermediate Level, 10/10 stars.

9) I am a member of my school’s Model UN Club. I traveled to Georgetown's NAIMUN conference Sophomore Year, and will return there this February.

10) I attended Middlebury's New England Young Writers’ Conference last may (Sophomore Year).

11) I attended Stanford University’s EPGY between Sophomore and Junior Years, studying Creative Writing intensively for three weeks.

12) Between Freshman and Sophomore Year, I volunteered as a camp counselor, and took care of autistic child for six weeks.

13) I am a member of Columbia University's Student Film Actors Pool (i.e. I act in student films there).

14) I did in-depth research about the Cuban poetry scene in spring of Sophomore Year, which I expanded on Junior Fall.

14) I am in two improv groups (will lead one in Senior Year).

15) I perform songs often at coffeehouses and school venues.

My essays, teacher recommendations, and interviews will all be great (or at least I will try my very best to make them as great as possible).

Connections:
- Someone on board of Northwestern willing to write a rec.
- Someone very involved with Brown willing to write a rec.
- Creative Writing professor wants me at Tufts (willing to advocate for me).
- Legacy @ Georgetown.
- Connection with Creative Writing Professor at UChicago.
- Involved Cornell alumni willing to write a rec.

OKAY. So now that the novel is over, here are the schools that I would absolutely LOVE to be chanced for (withdrawing Dartmouth, Stanford, and Brown since they are complete and utter crapshoots):
Amherst
UPenn
Northwestern
Georgetown
Cornell
Swarthmore
UChicago
Tufts
UVA
University of St. Andrews

Thanks guys!

You have pretty good ECs and impressive connections (good if they can write you a VERY good letter). You still have time to improve your objective stats. But good luck!
Chance me also?

okay, thanks i’ll go chance you! also can i add colby to my list?

bumpbumpbump :)

you need to have high sat (or act) and sat IIs to have chances at top colleges.
also, raise your gpa as much as you can. you will have very difficult time getting into top colleges with sub 3.7UWGPA.

stanford, brown, dartmouth, chicago, amherst, swarthmore and penn are reach schools even if you get 2300+ (or 34+ act) and 750+ on sat IIs. (reach for everybody)

you will have better chances at uva and tufts.

do you have any hook or is your HS feeder school to some colleges?

you are in

OP, i am very curious.
are you attending one of those high schools in the northeast?

yes, i do haha. my school is a ‘feeder school’ for brown, st. andrews, and princeton normally, but princeton only for the valedictorian generally. but one person goes to amherst every year, and generally a bunch go to dartmouth… but all the people that go to dartmouth are geniuses (i.e. smarter than me).

and i certainly don’t have any diversity hooks haha, i’m an affluent white male. :frowning: but i mean if you call my pursuit of creative writing and the establishment of my journal a hook, i have that?

p.s. chentevr, where exactly am i in? haha.

Yeah, you’re in.
The GPA is a little low, but that’s mostly because of freshman year which, as far as I know, most schools don’t consider that much. The SAT math honestly isn’t that big of a deal considering your major, but since you’re a junior and you have time I’d retake it anyways. EC’s are as amazing as they can be.
I would add Brown and Dartmouth to your list if I were you. You honestly have a great shot at both of those schools. Not so sure about Stanford.
Amherst: Low match
UPenn: Low reach/High match
Northwestern: Low match
Georgetown: Match
Cornell: High match
Swarthmore: Don’t know enough
UChicago: Match/High match
Tufts: Low match
UVA: Safety
University of St. Andrews: No idea

Northwestern, Upenn, Cornell, and Georgetown are high reaches I’d say. Try to raise GPA.

Chance me back??

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1246572-chance-me.html</a></p>

i think you have solid chances at many colleges if you raise your gpa and sat scores.

good luck to you

thanks 20more :)

the spectrum of results i’m getting is huge hahaha, i guess that’s just due to the differences of opinion people have regarding the selection components and process of each school.

Kenyon College has undoubtedly one of the best undergrad creative writing experiences. Add it to your list. UofIowa (for future purposes) has the best writers workshop (grad school).

Brown reach
Amherst reach
UPenn reach
Northwestern reach
Georgetown low reach
Cornell low reach
Swarthmore low reach
UChicago reach
Tufts match/highmatch
UVA low reach
University of St. Andrews no idea… sounds unknown in a way… so safety?

chicago RD admit rate will be below 10% next year.
Apply EA to chicago for better chances.

With so many connections and extracurriculars I think you have a great chance at all these schools. the ivys you applied for and UChicago are still a reach though, because of you lowish GPA and SAT score. Good luck though!

Chance back please (:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1241354-decent-gpa-high-sat-1-weak-ecs.html</a></p>

for the record guys, people with much lower gpas at my school have gotten into st. andrews, so i’m not really worried about that one. and kenyon is on my list haha, but i figure it’s pretty much a likely.

anymore opinions? :)

Your EC’s are amazing!! I would imagine that the only schools you might have some trouble with would be UPenn and Cornell and possibly Northwestern and UChicago (just because of your SAT scores and some of your grades) but I think you’re chances are solid for all the others. It’s interesting how you applied to top-tier and second-tier schools but not anything lower. Don’t get me wrong, you’re a strong applicant but schools want to see GPA’s ans test scores match a student’s involvement more. Chance back?

looks good decent actually

^ I’m a junior, so I haven’t applied anywhere yet, haha. And those are just my ‘reach’ schools… I’m going to toss in a couple safety/likely schools as well as however many I choose from the list on this thread, but I have some time to do so… my grades and sat’s are going up with practice so… no worries, I won’t be applying with stats that are quite this low! But thanks for the kind words about my ECs :). And of course I’ll chance back!
