Chance Me (Will Chance Back)

Hello,
I was wondering if I would have any chances at the schools listed at bottom I have a strong upward trend and I repeated my Sophomore year at a private school (I've asked many Ivy reps, they don't mind as long as I do better). So here goes...

Sophomore year 2 3.9 UW no W (at another school, 1 AP 4 Honors)

Recs:

1 counselor: Great Rec, counselor used to be dean of admissions at Princeton he says he'll pull strings and help as much as possible

Hooks: I am a first generation immigrant and college, father was an illegal immigrant. He died of cancer when I was in 6th grade. My mother does not speak any English, I had to take care of the family business and my mother since then. We used my father's health insurance money to pay for my first year at Boarding School but was kicked out because we can't afford the next year. I then moved to the East Coast from California with my mother and my first Sophomore year I had a lot of family issues. Second Sophomore year a prep school gave me a scholarship to attend. My years before boarding school I lived in the ghetto (literally) and thats why I did not do so well at boarding school. Sophomore year 1 had a lot of family issues.

I am also fluent in Mandrain and Cantonese. Almost there in Spanish

Colleges: Princeton (SCEA)
UPenn( deciding between Wharton and CAS give me advice please!!)
Columbia
Harvard
Yale
Brown
Emory(Oxford as possible safety)
Georgetown
U Mich
USC
Penn State

You definitely are a very competitive applicant for the ivies; if you apply to all of those you listed, you’ll probably get into at least one or two. You’re pretty close to a sure thing at UM, Emory, and Georgetown. Definitely a lock for USC and Penn State

^I agree with all that. You’re incredibly qualified for ALL these schools, and your background story is remarkable.

Good luck! :)

Are you in gap year as you have your senior GPA already?

You’re a really robust applicant, I would say Georgetown U Mich USC Penn State are all in reach, the other ones, you’ll need a strong strong essay.

Hey I have a chance on this page too.

I think you’re very well qualified and will get into plenty of the Ickes. Of course, it’s hard to tell

Oh no, I don’t have my senior GPA, I am just guessing haha.

C’mon dude, you know you’re in at ATLEAST one Ivy, maybe not HYP, but I’d put $20 on the other ivies. Good test scores, justifiable gpa, solid (Ivy-relative) EC’s. Seriously, write about these things in your essay.

If only I had that ACT score… :D

What is your intended major?

I am not sure how would your uwGPA look since you have 2 sophomore years. I would not count your senior GPA as you won’t get that before your application. If I just average the first 4 years, your uw GPA is 3.66 which is not really good for these schools on the list. However, you do have an upward trend. Your ACT and SAT2 scores are good but not really outstanding from other applicants for top half of the list but definitely sufficient for the lower half of the list. You should be high match for the lower half of the list (mainly due to the GPA). If the school does not count freshman grades, then you would be match for them except for more competitive programs such as engineering or business.

By the way, I speak Cantonese too. Good luck to your college application. Keep up with your good work.

really nice EC and you demonstarte leadership roles which Aadmissions committees will love. Your GPA is solid (upward trend will catch admissions committee’s eyes since your classes also got more rigorous with more Aps)…really solid ACT should be great as well. SAT2 are fine…any volunteering!?

Colleges: Princeton (SCEA) low reach/reach (as it is even for the best of applicants)
UPenn( deciding between Wharton and CAS give me advice please!!)
Wharton–reach (it is for everyone) CAS–low reach (if u apply ED i would say u have a ‘match’ [really good chance–no one has a match for UPenn])
apply ED to UPenn, u have a great chance, btw my bro got in with a 34
Columbia reach
Harvard reach
Yale reach
Brown low reach
Emory(Oxford as possible safety) match
Georgetown match
U Mich match/safety
USC match
Penn State safety

chance back

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1527194-brandeis-chance-will-apply-ed-chance-back-3.html?highlight=brandeis

I asked the Penn and Princeton rep about the calculation of repeat Soph GPA, they said that they would take the 2nd one over the first one.

^ Then your uwGPA would be around 3.74 or 3.95. I think the more appropriate way is to calculate GPA by courses not by year. That is the way most school would do rather than taking simple average from different years. Also, some schools only count core courses. So the GPA calculation is not straight forward particularly in your case. It is going to vary a lot depending on the school. You probably want to ask the admission office of each school to find out.

about as competitive of an applicant as you can get for the ivies, but its still a crapshoot. It’s fair to say if you apply to all of them you should be accepted to at least 1 (if not more) of them.
All the rest are strong matches (except georgetown depending on what school at georgetown you are applying to)

Bump 10char

You will Definitely get into Emory, i’m not sure bout the other schools. However, you should probably take the SAT, in order to see your range.
Chance me please!

I think a 34 ACT with two 750+ SATII suffices.

Not sure on HYP, but I’m fairly sure you’ll get into everything else! Almost certain for USC and UPenn - those could probably even be considered safeties for you. You have a very impressive application!

You are a very strong applicant and I think you deserve a shot at the Ivy League. I am also applying to Harvard( it’s my dream school) I wish you the best and tried to explain everything you did on this thread into your essay. Good Luck!

Wow you are definitely a strong applicant! I would say to go for Princeton SCEA. You have fantastic ECs, great grades, and have a very interesting back story. I don’t see why you shouldn’t apply to your number one choice. Best of luck!

You’ll definitely get into a lot of those schools due to your great ECs and background story. But you gotta make sure to focus on it in your essays and stuff because that’s gonna be what makes you stand out from all the other applicants with great ECs and test scores.
