I'am interested in applying to the following schools:
1. University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
2. University of Notre Dame
3. University of Illinois(would be in-state)
4. Indiana University

I'am looking to major in business, particularly finance/business administration. How would you rank these schools for business and what are my chances?

ACT: 29
English:30

University of Michigan: Slight Reach
Notre Dame: High Reach (75% have ACT composite score of over 31)
University of Illinois: Match
Indiana University: Match

My advice would be to do something fun over the summer, like an internship or some sort of volunteer service that you could write about in your essays. Also, study for the ACTs to get that score up above a 30. Other than that, your senior year looks like its going to be harder than mine, so good luck with that.

@Eagle1409 Well I ran for class president for junior year and senior year, as well as student council president… but lost however, I’m using that for my common app for the failure and lesson learned essay question.

Thanks for the chance.
You have a great GPA and rigor of courses.
Volunteer over this summer to get some hours. 36 is not too many. I know hospitals, etc require applications and training classes that may end up taking a whole month to finally start volunteering. Find a library, etc that allows you to start right away? A church even? In addition, your test score is just holding you back from being straight matches to these schools. Since you’re Hispanic, you do have an edge at that. You’re also instate for UIUC so that’s also a plus.

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor - Low reach

University of Notre Dame - Reach

University of Illinois - MATCH

Indiana University - MATCH

Get a leadership position in business club! Get that ACT UP!!

I do not personally know the rankings of the business schools here. Sorry about that :/

Thanks guys for your input …. I will definitely be picking up more community serve hours(between 50-100) and I will run for VP of Finance for Business Club!

Umich- High match/low reach
Notre Dame-reach
uiuc-match
indiana-low match

You should really work on getting your ACT up. I would say getting a 32 atleast would raise your chances significantly. Especially for UMich. And UMich’s Ross school of Business is a stellar school that you could apply to after your freshman year there. UMich would be your best bet for that reason. From my experience UMich really likes a student that is quite balanced so I would say to really get your volunteer hours up. 100+ should be safe. This will help for other colleges too.

Alright guys, I forgot to mention a couple things…
-I’m a first generation student
-I was accepted into First Class officially
-There is a good chance I will have a leadership in Business Club now, and possibly in Hockey as a Captain

good hooks but notre dame will still be a pretty significant reach with your ACT score, so i suggest bulking up other areas of your application with things that you are passionate about-maybe some more volunteering hours (try aiming for 100+) or starting a club or organization- i suggest DECA, which is an international club that you can start at your school and its quite famous so colleges will be impressed with you starting your own chapter at your school.

also i personally think illinois will be the best for business

Thank you for your input @imsoworried my school offers that, but I think I would prefer trying Business Professionals of America? Is that just as good as DECA? Btw I just got back from visiting Umich today and I love the campus… so far it’s my #1 choice. They said the median ACT is from 30-33, so my 29 isn’t too far off but I am taking my last one in September so hopefully I get a 30 or 31. Otherwise for community service hours I signed up so I should have 50 by the time I apply to colleges.

The schools you have listed and that others have listed are good ones. I tossed WashU out and I couldn’t find UMN Carlson.

The reaches were Notre Dame and UMich.
Everything else is a match. All those ECs and the ethnic and class issues will help secure your applications to the matches, but they won’t likely get you into ND and UM.

A lot of that could change with a 32 on an ACT re-take.
