Chance me...Will chance back

International (Indian)
Applying For- Computer Science
Scores:
SAT- 2160 (M-800,CR-720,W-620..essay-8)...will retake though
SAT 2 - Math2-800 & Physics-800

School grades:(CBSE)
9th: 9.2/10
10th: 9.2/10
11th: 96%(class topper)
12th midterms:95%(2nd rank)

My scores were bad in 9th and 10th because I shamefully sucked at my mother tongue(Hindi),and managed to get B2 in it on both occasions...I have straight A's on maths and science(now Physics and Chemistry) through High School

Essays:
Pretty good I guess ( Over how I overcame stammering which hampered me for years, its very powerful I would say)

Recommendations:
Excellent

Extracurriculars:

1) National Level Tennis player...Captained my state team for Interstate Nationals in U-14(2010),U-17(2011),U-19(2012 and 2014) over the the past 5 years

2) Have won national level tournaments in the U-18 category in both singles and doubles

3) Have worked in an NGO for street kids(teaching them basic math and stuff) for over 6 months

4) Qualified for 2nd stage of NTSE ( India's most prestigious exam and junior level) in 10th grade

5) Played for school U-19 cricket team as wicketkeeper

6) Got 43rd rank all over India at IMO(maths olympiad) conducted my Science Olympiad Foundation(SOF)....its not very prestigious though

7) Can program in C++,Java pretty well(when I say pretty well I mean for a high school student)

Can afford: 40-45k a year(will cover rest with student loan)

Applying to:

1)Stanford
2)Cornell
3)Caltech
4)UC Berkeley
5)MIT
6)UIUC
7)UT Austin
8)Georgia Tech
UCLA
Purdue

I personally feel my EC's are not as strong as they could be....Please share your views and be honest( I mean if you think I am a weak applicant don't hesitate to tell me that, its much more helpful than fake praises)

Edit Writing score was 640

as long as you get your writing to a 700, Cornell is def a match.

@nanerz‌ I always got near 800 on mock tests…expected the same on exam day…exam went excellent, but scores shocked me…dunno what happened…but yes i’ll try again…

And do I have a chance at UT Austin and UIUC?

1)Stanford-reach(you just never know, but good shot)
2)Cornell-reach/high match
3)Caltech-reach
4)UC Berkeley-don’t bother applying if you can’t afford
5)MIT-reach
6)UIUC-match
7)UT Austin-match
8)Georgia Tech-match
9)UCLA-same as no.4
Purdue-match/low match
Being an international student plus not being able to afford full cost will set the bar higher.
Your SAT alone seems weak, but it’s the writing section that holds back SAT score.

Good news is, that MIT and other prestigious schools don’t really pay attention to Writing section as long as you prove that you are a decent English Speaker. MIT representative personally told me that MIT weight little in writing section.

Also, your award/competition record, particularly IMO will really help you in MIT and GIT. MIT loves kids who made it to IMO(that means you passed AMC and AIME)
Good Luck…

@paul2752‌ u misunderstood…its not the same IMO…the one I took I got a rank of 43 among about 20000 kids all over the country…but its not the same IMO…the one you’re talking about is conducted by the government, while the one I gave is conducted by a private organization called SOF

Also, if I could afford them(if I take some financial hardships), am i solid candidate for UCB and UCLA?

Oh sorry, I thought those two were different. I thought you meant International Math Olympiad.

Yes, if you could afford full cost at UCB and UCLA, I think they should be high matches. The SAT seems a bit low but again, your school grade is more important in UC schools. You will need great essays and recommendations, though.

now i don’t know what bump means but i have seen it used on threads where people wait for replies…so BUMP
and also what the hell does BUMP stand for?

BUMP

BUMP

1)Stanford-reach
2)Cornell-high match
3)Caltech-reach
4)UC Berkeley-match
5)MIT-reach
6)UIUC-match
7)UT Austin-match
8)Georgia Tech-high match
UCLA-match
Purdue-match

I also think that you need to up ur SAT scores but keep in mind that this is not the only thing that colleges look at. Also, make sure ur essay has emotion. overcoming stuttering has a lot of potential as an essay, but only if it has a lot of emotion that tracks ur internal development as a person. Maybe have an english teacher or parent read it?

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1701416-chance-me-for-upenn-mit-and-uchicago-please.html#latest</a></p>

I am not really good at chancing but looking at the acceptance scores for the bottom 5 colleges in your list, the chances are great. I have no clue for the top 5 since I’ve known people with like a 1800 SAT getting into Stanford and a 2350 getting rejected by it.
Good Luck though : )

You have a good shot at all of these colleges, just make sure your essays are written well and allow your personality to shine through.

@nanerz‌ @paul2752‌ @figuresk8ter07‌ Edit retook the SAT and am expecting near 2300…I don’t think I made any mistakes in writing this time (unlike last time, when I was unsure of 6 and ended up with 7 mistakes)… So, does that make any difference in the overall application?..My super score would atleast cross 2250 and at best 2300+…

@GodMode‌ hope so…my essays are pretty good from what i feel

@michaelite‌ Did you give the December SAT? Then you are with me waiting for destiny on tuesday.
Anyways, UCLA and UCB are matches if you can pay
Purdue is safe
Stanford, ivies are a reach for everyone
MIT - reach
And hate to break it, but that B2 in Hindi could potentially hurt. That is why I took Sanskrit

@rohit7198‌ Thats just what I feel…I would be able to pay, though with some financial constraints, so would much prefer a private college with some scholarship. But well beggars can’t be choosers…yes I gave the December SAT and will be waiting with you…Do my grades seem to be bad, especially from 9th and 10th?

@rohit7198‌ would hindi grades really hurt?

@michaelite‌ The UC system takes those grades pretty seriously, so yeah that could cause a potential downfall. And the worst part is that it is Hindi. Ivies and Stanford can overlook it if your standarsized tests and essays are great. Have you given TOEFL?
And if you can commit 40-45k a year, that means you’ll need to apply for need based financial aid which is a problem for internationals.

@rohit7198‌ yup got a 110 at TOEFL…I have straight A’s in English, why the hell should Hindi matter. But well what can we do…Anyway thanks for the comments.
