Chance me, will chance back.

Recomendations:
Average-Above Average

Essays are expected to be average. No leadership positions as of yet, but planning to run this upcoming year.

Colleges:
Brown
Carnegie Mellon
U Michigan
Tufts
JHU
U Illinois

These are on the top half of my list, i already have my safety schools.
By the way I'm applying to the Engineering schools.
Chance away. :)

P.S. Any other colleges that might be match/high match?

I think that carnegie, umich, tufts and u illinois are matches for you as long as you have good essay, recs, and hopefully raise that SAT score. The other schools may be reaches b/c your SAT is too low for most top schools and your GPA is not that high.

Thank you GoldOwl :)

btw, what is a good SAT score?

For Brown, probably 2200+. For JHU, probably 2100+ would do.

I would ADD 100 points to what GoldOwl just told you for EACH of those schools since you want a “good” SAT score for those schools and not the median score. Your w GPA seems low, did you take the most rigorous course load? You will definitely need to raise your SAT score by about 100 points if you want to get into what I consider to be low reach schools listed below. That is not to say you won’t get into any of your low reach schools. You would have better chances if your score went up, that’s all. Try also taking the ACT. Nice AP scores, but those come into play more after you’re accepted.

Colleges:
Brown- high reach
Carnegie Mellon- low reach
U Michigan- high match/low reach (unless you’re in-state)
Tufts- low reach
JHU- low reach
U Illinois- high match/low reach (unless you’re in-state)

^
The school I went to my freshmen year didn’t have any honors classes (1 B+ and 1 A- lowered my GPA i think)
Sophomore: 2 honors classes
Junior: 2 honors 3 APs (two sciences)
Senior: 3 - 4 APs (two sciences)
I get all As but a B or B+ each year. I take two sciences every year except for freshmen year, if that matters. (I love science)

My college counselor says that because I’m an international student (though i study in the US) and English is not my first language, they lower the SAT CR scores for us? I don’t know if that is necessarily true, but I took the TOEFL and got 110/120, again I don’t know if it matters.

Most likely rejection at Johns Hopkins and Brown

OUCH, but thanks

Where are you from? What minority are you?

^
I’m from Thailand. Does it affect admissions at all?

I’d say it’s a reach for Brown, low reaches/high matches for the rest. I think what you need is a much higher SAT score and some better ECs. Sure, being a member of a club will certainly not HURT your resume…but colleges would like to see something that truly shows success and dedication or sets you apart from the crowd.

Retake your SAT1, and consider sending in 3 SAT2s by retaking Physics(and Chemistry). Brown is a long shot, but other schools listed seem reasonable. Write better than avg. personal statements please.

Great rank offsets the apparently weak GPA, but your SAT score and lack of ECs will probably result in rejection at Brown.
