Chance me! (Yale/ Brown&RISD/Williams)

I know the above three maybe super reach schools for me, but... PLEASE give me your most genuine idea! (Chance only for Brown is also welcomed!)

International student from China

Academic interest: art, but I really do want to explore more in the liberal art education.

SAT 2300 CR770 MA800 WR730

SATII: Math level II 800, Physics 800, French(self study) 640 (will take a gain in Oct along with literature to improve the score, hopefull 700+)

TOEFL:114 Reading 30 listening 30 speaking 27 writing 27

GPA: 3.3 unweighted ( our school is an extremly competitive public school, and school officials will explain in the transcript almost all courses at our school can be valued as honor courses, this GPA might be interpreted as 4.3 weighted in the final transcript)

Curriculum: AP physics through senior 2 (Our school only have AP for senior 2 students, physics/chemistry/biology)

ECs:
Design administrator for National MUN Southern China Regional Conference (hosted by the best university in our country, did almost every bit of the design for the conference)

MUN( vice secretary general in our school, attended the national MUN and got a prize for best presentation, did promotion work in the first year and an IOC DAIS, but worked on design in the second year)

Volunteering work in Thailand ( teach little children art & English up in a moutain in Chiangmai, brilliant experience& I really enjoy it; the program Kid Launch is supported by Brown)

School movie class teacher ( initiated this class and present movies/intros and host discussions)

Prefect (a community in our school to help Senior1 students get accustomed to our school)

200+ hrs community service in & outside school

Recommendation letters:
1 from my AP teacher, might be strong because I've always been her favorite student and got all As in four terms, and I did show creativity/leader in discussion in her classes)
1 from my art teacher (also a minor celebrity in China's art circle). He values me as one of his best students in his career.
(extra) from my english teacher. Also think me one of her best students ever, gonna be strong.

Extras:
I will send in my art profolio( which my art teacher gives very high comments & I don't know if it's good enough)

As an international student (from CHINA, too) your chances are significantly lower than the other applicants. Your GPA is also pretty low- I know that your school is rigorous, but a lot of schools will see 3.3 and immediately have a bad impression. You also haven’t taken a lot of APs for Yale/Brown/etc… but your SAT score is very impressive, which is something you have going for you.
Also, do you need financial aid? If you don’t, that increases your chances of getting in.
But overall… I’d say your chances are small :/

Ooops, I forgot to put my FC stastics in. YES my FC is poor: $20,000-$25,000 per year. Also, the unweighted GPA 3.3 will be pulled up to 4.3 weighted in the final script, a 3.3 GPA in our school will definitely in the top 5% in our school (We don’t have rankings, but I know this percentage for sure because each term they award students ranked in the top 5%)

oh okay, well then your GPA is fine, I guess… not really sure how international stuff works
but seeing as you need tons of financial aid…that doesn’t help you at all :frowning: top schools don’t usually want to give tons of money to international students when they could be giving it to students inside the US with similar stats

Thanks for your comment, anyway I know for reach schools nothing is for sure & I will keep looking for other fits and working on my application to boost my chances :)

yale and williams are need blind to internationals
so applying for FA doesn’t matter

Well, for Brown&RISD i’m assuming you’re applying for the dual degree, meaning you’ll have to submit a portfolio + the 3 drawings to RISD.

And i’d say you’d have a somewhat decent chance, since you seem to be going for art, and most art schools care more about the portfolio (you seem to have a good sense of art from what you listed, so your portfolio should be at least decent)

I thought the general consensus was that they SAY they are need blind, but aren’t really.

Yes I’m definitely heading for the arts, and that’s basically why I’m considering the three schools. Williams does not have a very distinct art program, but the brilliant art history course is also a huge attraction and I know it’s a really rigorous school to explore.

Have you considered cooper union? It gives a full scholarship to all of it’s students, so that would help your FA situation. It’s extremely selective, but it’s also pretty prestigious.

I’ve checked the cooper union before. I think the school of art is great, but my question is, I don’t want to limit myself to art though I know I love it. I want to learn something more in my undergraduate years & have a broader scope of my career after that. I don’t know what else I will pick up in the journey, so I don’t want to have courses limited to art.

Thanks for all your advices!!

You have a great chance. Don’t listen to those discouraging ppl because they are just jealous. Some of them are very insecure. On the contrary, being an international can boost your chances because in general, the SAT scores for those students are much lower, so in you should stand out in your pool. I wish you the best of luck. And remember: don’t believe anyone who says you have " little chance."

Thanks, selectum! I’m just so unsure of Yale… If I have a 20% chance I will ED Yale, however, I just don’t know if I will waste my ED chance if I choose Yale :(

Selectum: I’m not trying to belittle the OP, I’m trying to give an honest opinion. I think it would suck more if everyone on this thread told her what she wanted to hear, and then she expected something and was rejected.

That said, look at the stats for these top colleges. Their acceptance rate is under 10% for ALL applicants, so I’m not sure if 20% is a good place to hedge your bet on ([Admission rate rises to 9.79 percent for Class of 2013 - The Daily Princetonian](http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/2009/04/01/23213/))

I’m not saying that you have no chance at all, I’m saying that history proves it’s significantly harder for international students than domestic students to get into top schools, and that your achievements, while noteworthy, are by no means the creme de la creme of your pool.

Sorry if this sounds harsh; I’m just trying to be honest.

fuzzyfirebunny: Thanks for your frankness  I’m trying to find myself a position and all kinds of comments are welcomed. I’m BY NO MEANS undermining your comment and I know I’m not that competitive to be “surely in" for any of the above. If I want to hear people confirm me I wouldn’t have posted here, haha~

Thanks!

sure  looking over your profile again, more closely, there are definitely aspects that make you stand out. the 2300 is great; the art portfolio (depending on how good it is) may even be a hook that can get you in. at this point, all you can really do is write good essays and get everything in on time. good luck! :)
