Chance Me: Yale REA - URM/LGBTQ+

What does the NPC show for you for Yale? If you are at $15k or below, absent huge merit that covers more than tuition, it may still be the best economic deal if you get in. Also, as you consider schools and economics of attendance, don’t forget to look at financial resources and support outside of the basics. Well endowed schools like Yale, offer very generous support for summer study, study abroad, clubs, independent research, etc…

Would you mind sharing your list of schools?

The problem is that my parents’ home hyperinflates the EFC past that, but I did clarify that my family has outside expenses (student loans, eldercare, my dad is going to retire and he provides like 75% of our total income, etc.) in CSS.

That’s a nice list. I think your targets are high targets, but we don’t know how much of a boost the URM hook will be – they may end up being true targets.

I’m a big fan of the Quaker Consortium, and you are applying to three of them. You’d be able to take courses at all the schools in the group: UPenn, Bryn Mawr, Haverford, Swat. (Those that do take advantage of cross-registration sometimes have to hustle – figuring out the logistics of getting from A–>B–>A – but it’s doable.)

I’m glad that you are applying to your state flagship. If the sky fell, and your safeties were the only schools that admitted you, you at least would be able to go to Rutgers – a fine school. You may also be able to take advantage of their Honors college/program.

Thank you for your response.

I’m glad you noticed how I included the Quaker Consortium in there - I’m really into it, and I like the environment in the area. Getting into Rutgers Honors College would be great.

Your accomplishments are outstanding by any standard. Congrats and continue to make a mark on the world! I sense you are a straight admit. Did you get an interview
?

Thank you for the support! I haven’t gotten an interview yet, and honestly, I don’t want to toot my own horn but I think it would be a waste of resources to give me an interview. I think my application has enough data to make a decision (especially since I have 3 recommenders).

Yet, I don’t know. Just a high schooler, LOL.

Wow, your accomplishments are mighty impressive. I don’t say that often around here. But if you don’t get into Yale, then I don’t know what on earth they are looking for.

If for some reason you don’t get into Yale, then I would strongly consider an ED2 app to UChicago. They have an interdisciplinary major that is right up your alley: HIPS History Philosophy and Social Studies of Science and Medicine.

Thank you! We shall hope, of course. Thank you for that insight. I was initially applying UChicago but decided to switch out with Northwestern.

I’ll work on the UChicago app!

ED2 confers a big advantage over RD. Northwestern doesn’t have ED2, but Chicago does. There are also other schools that have ED2 options. But it sounds like you would like the Chicago curriculum.

I think most of my schools are liberal arts focused, so yep! The only thing I’m concerned (which was the main reason for me dropping it off my list) is the financial aid at UChicago. I heard it was not good, sadly.

While Chicago doesn’t have endowments as large as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc, it is still pretty solid. I know of several students who received amazing aid packages.

The only downside of ED2 is that if accepted, you won’t be able to compare aid against other schools.

I think it is a positive that you don’t have an interview. Points to straight admit IMHO.

Got in!
