Chance me: Yale, Stanford, Columbia, Princeton, UCB

*left out Dartmouth in my title, please chance me for that school too! Thanks ^_^

Hi all! I'm new to posting and whatnot but I've lurked on CC for a good year or so now so I hope I'm doing this correctly LOL. I'm doing this because the anxiety of waiting for acceptance/rejection letters is killing me and I'd just like some kind of opinion T_____T

I've applied to Yale, Stanford, Columbia, Princeton, Dartmouth, and UC Berkley. Yale is definitely my top choice because they have a stellar music program -- I play violin and if accepted, I'll go for a Bachelor of Arts in music. Otherwise, I've applied undeclared to the others. Moving on...

Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.67
Class rank: 4 out of 802

Ethnicity: Asian

PSAT - 234 (NMSF)
SAT I - 2360 (M 760, CR 800, W 800)

French - 5

Currently taking Psych, Music Theory, Econ (micro), and Statistics

Clubs:
FBLA (4-year)-
Current secretary of high school chapter, I've won several competitions. The usual
Music club (3-year)-
Current co-president, we just play at nursing homes once in a while. Nothing spectacular but it's a leadership position regardless LOL.
Mock trial (3-year)
CSF (2-year)

Extracurriculars:
Violin-
4-year school's symphony orchestra first violinist, current concertmaster and president of orchestra
4-year member of local youth orchestra (toured Europe with them), current assistant concertmaster
3-year member of school's advanced music program (I didn't do it freshman year because it was a joke back then hahaha)
Summer 2011 @ BU Tanglewood Institute (summer music camp), summer 2012 @ Aspen Music Festival
Soloist with said youth orchestra, school orchestra, local community orchestras
All-state orchestra 3 years
Won several regional competitions, finalist at state competition, given numerous recitals
Private teacher is a professor at USC Thornton
Community service hours from music-related jobs and whatnot (see below)
Piano-
Passed all eight levels of ABRSM, the last two with distinction (highest honors). I no longer play because violin takes up so much time

I have sent arts supplements and I am still deciding whether or not I'd like to pursue music -- I have auditioned for several music schools already.

Community service and work:
Coached elementary school string kids, numerous performances at nursing homes and whatnot, internship at local biotech lab, FBLA and CSF stuff, gigs. I have nearly 200 hours of community service

Misc:
Semifinalist in Jeopardy Teen Tournament... LOL
Advanced to AIME (AMC) junior year, don't know about this year but it wouldn't influence my app
AP Scholar with Distinction

Essays & recs should be solid
Hook is definitely violin

Thanks :)

I’m really new at chancing(been a lurker for over a year now) so here we go:

SAT: You’re all good on that front. Should be no issue.

AP: All good on that front too, I’d assume. Shouldn’t be an issue, especially with the fives. My school doesn’t even offer half of those so it sucks for me.

Clubs: Nothing really jumps out at me from here, message me so we can talk about the FBLA and CSF. I have no idea what those are^^.

ECs: This is where, I believe, your strong point lies. You have a huge range of musical talent and activities with many commendations and awards. This definitely will boost you tons. Although, I will say, there isn’t much diversity in your activities and one of the common themes among the Ivies is the need to branch out and experience all aspects of academia and opportunities offered to you.

Comm. Service: 200 hours? Nice!! That’s great, but just remember the rule, if you did 200, someone did 400 and then someone did 800. I would say this definitely helps you out, but it isn’t anything that would pop off the page and make me go “Yes! Got to have you!” It merely shows you’re a dedicated and well rounded student.

Misc: Nothing jumps out except the AP Scholar with distinction.

As long as your recs and essays were solid, you’re definitely going to get acceptances at at least 2 or 3 of the schools you applied to. Stanford, Yale, Harvard, and Columbia are reaches for anyone, so if you don’t get in, don’t take it personally.

Keep me updated on your acceptances/deferrals/rejections! I’m extremely interested!

Yale: Statistical Match
Stanford: Statistical Match
Columbia: Low Reach
Princeton: Statistical Match
UCB: Low Match/Match (Helps a lot that you aren’t applying to ENG…)
Dartmouth: Low Reach

I am not sure Ivies have great music programs which is the reason several like Columbia and Harvard have programs with external schools.

Has Stanford asked you to come in and perform?

Thank you all!!

@texaspg, With the exception of Yale and JHU (which has a separate conservatory, Peabody), you’re correct. Columbia has an joint program with Juilliard and Harvard with New England Conservatory but both programs admit very few students so I didn’t bother trying for it (I am auditioning for NEC at the end of this month though). If I commit to one of the schools I mentioned on this thread other than Yale I won’t pursue music haha  As for Stanford, I had a live audition with them a few weeks ago but it wasn’t by invitation; I requested one on my application.

I think your chances for all of these schools are just as good as anyone else’s. Ivies will still not be easy for you to get into, as they are reaches for essentially every applicant. But if you have applied to all of these schools, you are bound to be accepted by a few of them.

They’re all weird with their admission but I’d say match for UCB, and low reach for the rest. Good luck!

"As for Stanford, I had a live audition with them a few weeks ago but it wasn’t by invitation; I requested one on my application. "

I guess thats what I meant. Someone mentioned an audition last year.

Yale, Stanford, Columbia, and Princeton are all reaches. I’d say you have the best (slim) chances at Yale, you seem to fit their mold a little better. I know a kid from my school who had an app very similar to yours but with piano, he was accepted Yale EA. Stanford and Princeton will be your most difficult because your app lacks something that pops out besides massive musical commitment (which many applicants have). Berkeley is a match

I’m hoping to apply to schools like hers and I was wondering… what sticks to you? I saw that you mentioned things that “stick out”. So what exactly is that to you?

thank you all  really appreciate it!

@superscientist44 - I really don’t have any academic accomplishments, spectacular internships, or anything of the sort so I’m assuming that’s what littlebuilder meant. Unfortunately for me, music took up too much time for me to possibly handle academic “extras” haha, but that’s definitely a weakness for me ):

hey, just wondering where’d you end up getting into? i have similar stats LOL

I think you definitely have a chance for these schools depending how good your essays are (I am sure you have a lot of cool experiences from the ones stated to talk about). But, I don’t see anything that makes to much different that those who apply to these IVs. Good grades, academics, and extra-curriculums are evident but you could do something that could set you apart (maybe a research paper, etc.). I think you just need to focus on doing what you enjoy and not stress to much more about college; You seem very smart and if you can distinguish yourself by providing some more quality rather than quantity or doing something that is different than most applicants you have a good shot

I think you’re in great shape. Test scores and GPA are incredible.

I will put it this way: I’d bet money that you will be accepted to one.

@ireallylikemusic: Hey, how’d you find my old thread? Haha but I’m in at Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia, and UCB and waitlisted at Princeton and Stanford. For the record, I’ve also been accepted to Northwestern, Rice, JHU Peabody, USC, and NEC for violin performance and rejected at Juilliard. At the moment I’ll probably choose Yale or NW but we’ll see.

Best of luck to you in admissions; everything will work out in the end  And thank you to all who chanced me!!

Your SAT scores are impeccable. I think that you’ll be able to go anywhere you want.

Can you chance me back?
