Schools that do not rank report deciles and also if your school is fairly well known then top U’s like Yale and Vandy will have an idea where you stand in class based on prior history and other applicants from your school. You are obviously high with 3.97 UW, but especially for schools like Yale the difference between being student that year versus one of the best makes a difference. Any ways, I think you have good shots at both and likely will get a fair amount of scholarship money at Vandy.

Rigorous Curriculum : Check
Good SAT/ACT Score : Check (That ACT is great)!
Ecs : Theyre decent.
Also (not being racist or anything) but you being a Hispanic will certainly help !

Id say if you manage to write killer essays and get good LORs then your chances at Yale would be around 60% !
Vanderbilt should more or less be a match! I think youre doing great!
All the best ! :D

It’s hard to know your exact chances since there is no reference with GPA/rank. Obviously you’re one of the top students with a 3.97 UW GPA and such a rigorous courseload. But even if your school doesn’t rank, colleges still have ways in which they can compare where you stand against the rest of your class. Do you know if your school sends a lot of people to ivies/top schools?

Your ACT score is awesome. Trust me, a Hispanic with a 35 ACT is extremely rare and is a huge hook. At a glance, this is the most impressive aspect of your application. Your subject test scores are good as well, and I’m guessing your AP scores are decent since you’re an AP scholar with distinction. And being a National Hispanic Scholar AND National Merit Semifinalist are also nice accomplishments. It’s obvious that testing is one of your strongsuits.

But your ECs are definitely lacking when it comes to a school like Yale. You have some leadership positions in speech/debate as well as ceramics club, and participation in some other activities. Nothing unique for the most part, and will not help in making you stand out. Not much volunteering either (doesn’t really matter anyway). I would say your ECs are fine for Vandy, but mostly unimpressive for Yale.

Without knowing where you stand against your classmates with an exact rank/percentile, and no idea if your school is competitive in sending kids to Ivies/top universities:

@Catria
Hispanic with a 35 ACT, top of her class (UW 3.97 w/rigorous courseload), and ‘decent’ ECs with leadership positions? I’m positive it would be a Low Match for Vandy, but that’s just me.

OP I’d be extremely surprised if you didn’t get into Vanderbilt. Yale is a little more of a toss-up though. You shouldn’t worry ofc, you’ll be fine

Ah, I’m going to compute this more precisely, but your chances are probably not over 50%, though they are probably superhigh compared to basically anyone White or Asian (hispanic is not that large of a hook, yale is superselective). Your ECs are sort of weak (few leadership positions).

But let me compute this. How strong is your high school? Best in your area? Nationally ranked? Private or public? What state?

Oh, and is there anywhere else you’d like to be chanced while I’m doing this?

Best chance for any actual person I’ve done yet.

36% for Harvard
45% for Princeton
73% for Columbia
52% for Stanford
41% for Brown (which actually surprises me for being relatively low)
90% for Cornell
81% for Dartmouth

I could go on.

All this also means that if you applied to both Yale and Harvard, your chance of getting into one would be about 79%. Add Princeton, and you’ll see a chance of getting into one of HYP much over 80%.
