Chance me? You'll see something on my "app" that isn't normal amongst your typical high-schooler.

Hey guys, so this is my first, and probably last, thread on CC. I’m going to be an incoming senior for the years of 2015-2016. I’m hoping that you guys will be able to help me identify and narrow down some colleges that I may be able to get into. My “dream” colleges would have to be UC Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford (if I got accepted, I would be the happiest kid), some lower-leveled Ivy’s. Alright, here we go:

Academics:
-4.27 W GPA, 3.78 UW GPA (10th-11th)
(4.0 W in Soph year, 4.5 W in Junior year)
-32 ACT, 10 Essay (33 Essay/Writing Combined)
-I go to a Tier 1 high school
-Planning to take SAT Math 2 and Bio E
-Have taken or going to take: Ap bio, ap comp sci, honors chem, APES, honors trig/pre-calc, APUSH, AP U.S Gov, HAP, AP Calc AB, AP Human Geo.
-Haven’t received my AP scores yet (took APUSH and APES so far)
-Top 9% (My school only lets you know if you’re in the top 9% or not)
-1 online community college course (Intro to Business)

EC’s:
-Mentored/coached elementary students soccer for 4 years (won an award from the organization for being an outstanding leader/mentor)
-internship at a import/exporting company
-probably going to volunteer at a senior shelter or hospital
-Approx. 100 hours of volunteering in total
-President of Key Club and Founder of GenerationOn at my school
-NHS
-Highschool soccer for 2 years
-Band for 2 years
-This is probably the MOST IMPORTANT factor that will go onto my application and the REASON why I might have a chance of being accepted into some of the top-notch universities: A couple of my friends and I have made a business-related company that is solely regulated online. No, we aren’t just a couple of kids who wanted to make an “idea”. This is an actual, professional legal company that has been approved by the state government. It has not been exposed to the public yet, so I can’t go into further detail due to confidentiality. However, one of my friends/partner has connections to a highly successful entrepreneur from his dad, and he approved of our idea for the company, saying that it would have a pretty high chance of success in the market. We’re also pursuing this idea of ours because we want to be initiators of an innovation that we made, not just for college reasons.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to go over my “application”!

You seem very well rounded though your ACT is a little below average for these schools. Congrats on your online business that’s really cool

That’s not THAT unique dude. Me and my buds have an actual company with actual employees (we handle our own taxes and stuff) and we make ten’s of thousands a year. Come to think of it, none of us considered making it a point on our college apps. I guess we will now though. Our school has like 5 highly successful student start ups. Anyway, it’s a good enough hook to get you into the Ivy’s with those stats and ECs. You have promise. Good luck

And also, if your company isn’t launched before you start applying to colleges, it will probably have a negative effect on your decisions. Try and have it marketed before you start applying to schools so they’ll know youre experienced, how successful it is, the process of putting it together, etc.

Yeah, I know. But you have to view it in a broader perspective. How many high schoolers have actually done what we did? Not many. But other than that, yeah we’re planning to publish it very soon, knowing that applications are due sometime the end of this year.

Cold water here:

A license to start a business is not the same thing as having a business that is a going concern. An opinion that it ‘would have a pretty good chance’ of succeeding is just that: an opinion. And, an online business is not especially novel these days.

I yfou have your business up and running before applications go in you may have a story to tell (otherwise it’s just a ‘we have a great idea’)- but even so, starting online business is not so rare a thing -even among high-schoolers, and especially not among the type of high-schoolers that get into Stanford- that you can count on it getting you in to top tier schools.

That said- go for it. It sounds as if you have an idea that is exciting to you. Follow it and see where it takes you

Thanks for the comment! As for all of the other factors that I have, do you think I would have a good/somewhat of a chance for the top UC’s? Stanford is pretty much a dream college for me, so I’m not expecting much from that school.

You have a good chance of good UC and smaller chance of Stanford. Found I ng a company is impressive but not as unique as you may hope. Good thing you didn’t kill your grades over it, or else your chances would be substantially lower. I think You’ll get in either LA or Berkeley or both, and stanford is a coin flip

Hey, despite what anyone says, that is is unique! However, I agree-- keep pursing it and continue development.
