Two character recommendation letters: extremely good. One of them is from a mentor of 2 years-> She attended Harvard U.. The other one is from Stanford instructor, in which he states that I am better than 99% of the HS students he ever taught.
For teachers recommendation letter, one is from AP Mandarin teacher who knows me personally. The other one is from AP World History. Both of them are just going to be as good as the character recommendation letters.
College advisor rec: explains why did I scored low in reading the section.

9th: 86+ uw, 88+uw
10th: 95+, 96+ --> one weighted class

are u guys judging my chance only base on my SAT score? =[

Your SAT score is what gets you in the door.

can my essays save me tho?

“can my essays save me”

Not really, Your essay is what they look at and compare you to other qualified applicants, but it’s your SAT / GPA that qualifies you… (in general)

soo, how can some people get into HYPSC with 1800s on the SAT? Clearly my sister was accepted to columbia college with 1820…SOMEONE HELP ME

Harvard - reach
Princeton - reach
Columbia - reach
Stanford - reach
Cornell - reach/low reach
UoChicago - reach/low reach
U of Rochester - match/high match
Boston College - match/high match
Wash U - high match/low reach

to my knowledge, essays can bump you in if you’re close, but they won’t be your savior

as to your sister, there’s always luck, or maybe your sister did something amazing - usamo winner, etc - it’s impossible to tell without context

for daemon: the reaches that u posted are possible reaches right? they are not like SUPER reaches right?

let’s say the first four are 99% reach - so basically ‘super reaches’ barring a miracle
cornell and uchi are possible, but it’s going to be really tough
the bottom 3 are more realistic, but still relatively difficult

“soo, how can some people get into HYPSC with 1800s on the SAT?”

Can you kick a football 60 yards?

I don’t know any normal applicants (see kick football) who got into HYPSC with anything even close to 1800s on the SAT. Do you? (try 2250+)

at Ncmentor: my sister got 1820 and shes in columbia college but mainly through NYTimes scholarship. =( perhaps that was a miracle =]
what can i do?

Columbia College is easier to get into than Columbia University.

In the world of college admissions, winning the NYT Scholarship is almost as impressive as being able to kick 60-yard field goals…

@Analgin, Columbia College = one of the colleges under Columbia University

@pbr: yea i am apply to NYTimes too =), so the question is, how did she make to the NYTimes, our stats is 90% the same, except that she applied to college even though she only spent 2 years in the US.

The NYT Scholarship (just like college admissions) is not only about “stats.” I’ve met a very impressive former recipient of the scholarship, and her high school stats were not impressive in the least.

Yea, thats why I applied for it. The scholarship, in my sister’s opinion, is mainly based on the interview. if they like you, theyll take you, if they dont, then no.
