Chance Me?

Hi can you all please tell me my chances into getting into UVA. I am a junior and these are my current / projected values: My academic performance is okay. My grades in Latin and Chemistry are a B's but you can't see that from my GPA since I took a lot of APs. My problem is do not have good extra curricular ( I have no Sports & Music, very little Volunteering, because I am always hitting the books so how will this effect my chances). Also I am in the great state of Virginia!!

GPA: 4.1 (.5 for APs and none for honors)
Grades in Key Classes:
Biology - A-
Chemistry - B+
AP Biology - A
AP Chemistry - A-
AP Physics - A-
Precalc - A
BC Calc - A
Multivariable - A

APs: 9 APs by Senior Year, one or two maybe be a 4 though and rest are definitely going to be a 5)
PSAT: 232 (National Semifinalist)
SAT: 800 Math
760 Reading
700 Writing
Total SAT: 2260
Subject Test: Math II 800, Biology 800

Extracurricular Activities:

Varsity Math Team - AIME Qualifier ( Top 1% on AMC 10 EXAM), ARML Participant, Local Middle School Mathcounts Coach, 1st Place at a local University held math contest

Biology Olympiad - Co-Captain of School club, USABO Semifinalist ( Top 500 / 8000), 2nd Place at Local Competition at a University

Varsity Public Forum Debate - 4th Place at Metropolitan Debate JV Tournament, Quarterfinals Liberty Debate Classic

Latin Club : 3 Gold Medal Winner on NLE (National Latin Exam), Latin Honor Society

Volunteering - National Honor Society, Local Hospital

Research / Work Experience - Conducted research project on protein targets in Anthrax @ George Mason University over the summer and used it to get 3rd Place at School Science Fair

So how do I stack up? Am I too focusced on science and academics or is that just enough to get into UVA?

You go to TJ…you’re in.

Wahoomb is probably right – the only caveat is you should try and figure out your class rank. While the vast majority of your classmates at TJ will be accepted to UVa next year – approximately 25% or so will not. As long as you don’t rank in the bottom quartile, you should be fine. With the new grading scale in Fairfax schools, I don’t have a good idea where your 4.1 GPA puts you. BTW – does TJHSST not follow the new weighting? I thought Fairfax Co. adopted the 1 point bonus for AP and .5 bonus for Honors.

So even though Fairfax county schools did change it to what you had mentioned AVA55 some people just use this old system to make it more comparable… Also about the wahoomb comment I thought my chances were fairly good untill last year our School President got waitlisted into Harvard, Accepted into Duke and rejected from UVA so I started to wonder what was happening and just wanted to make sure there wasn’t something really funky happening that made my app somehow bad for UVA

TJHHST2013: Even though the president didn’t get into UVA…did he or she have a strong GPA plus ECs or was it possible being very involved in the school meant he or she did not have a strong GPA? Even though FCPS don’t rank, colleges in VA have a good idea of what constitutes a strong GPA and course load. TJ gets 200+ into UVA every year.

Not getting into UVA and getting into Duke is actually not that uncommon.
