Chance me?

Hello :)

I am currently a freshman at a California CC. Upon applying to UCLA and UCSB in the fall, I will have a 3.8 gpa. However, I am highly discouraged because I plan to major in communications.

Other info - I am hispanic (if this is still considered leverage?)
I am on my city college's journalism staff and also have an internship.

USC is also a top choice. I would strive to major in Broadcast Journalism.

Can anyone offer me some opinions or advice? What are my chances of acceptances?

hmmmm, you are a reach for communication for UCLA and USC. Do you have a low 3.8 or a high 3.8? If a high 3.8 then you have a chance. If a low 3.8, then it is a reach.

Go here to see your chances for UCLA. [Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2010 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof10_mjr.htm)

Thank you! I actually have a 3.80 :frowning: …looks like UCLA & USC are highly unrealistic, just as I presumed.

What about UCSB?

if you have a tag for UCSB, then you are good.

Have you tried to look into somewhat less impacted majors like anthropology, history or even philosophy? You would have a better chance at UCLA or USC with those three majors I said above.

Psychology is impacted but its less impacted than communication studies. Have you tried looking into psych yet?

I’m pretty sure history is an impacted major^

I am actually considering declaring my major as either Gender Studies or Anthropology. If I were to earn acceptances under a Social Science major, how difficult would it be for me to switch majors? Or, does anyone know how difficult it would be for me to later decide to double major (Comm & Social Science major)? I thoroughly enjoy Anthropology/Gender Studies, however, I do not see a future in it for me career-wise.

I know schools discourage this - because it could essentially be a loophole for many. However, I am willing to stick with my social science major for about a year - and then try to double major or switch majors. Would that be equally as difficult as applying into communications to begin with??

I appreciate the feedback very much! Thanks again  :)

No for UCLA. I say good chance for USC as I heard the average GPA for Annenberg was a 3.75. As for UCSB, almost sure you’ll get in!

As for career, I think the school name carries a lot of weight in LA. I know someone who landed a good job in PR and she did Bio @ UCLA.

Thank you SMCguy!

I know I sound incredibly silly, but ever since I was a little girl I’ve dreamt of becoming a news anchorwoman :stuck_out_tongue: …I currently have an internship with a tv station, where I interview people both on and off camera and write journal articles. My mom went to USC and my dad went to UCLA. I’d be thrilled to attend either school. Maybe I can declare myself as an Anthropology major at USC and switch to Annenberg later on.

Thank you for your response! :)
