Planning on majoring in Econ or Business.
GPA: 3.977 unweighted
4.4 weighted (my school doesn't weigh, but I ranked honors & AP anyways)
Top 1% of class

ACT: 31 (32 Superscored)

Subject Tests:
SAT II Math II: 690 (retaking)
SAT II Physics: 670
SAT II US History: 770
Also have 4.0 at a local community college (Macro Econ in the summer)

Extracurriculars: VP of Rambassadors Leadership Club, Assistant VP of DECA, Gallery Interpreter/Volunteer at WA State History Museum (200+ hrs), Windshield Repair Technician and Hiring Assistant @ Microchip Autoglass, Coding a Forex trading Program for automated trades, Assistant at Father's Wine Distribution Company in China (translating emails, also helping him to expand to US by obtaining wine distribution licenses & talking with local shipping executives)

You’re in great shape, but what was your real SAT score? Subject tests aren’t that big of a deal here but they are required, so I’d definitely focus on getting your real SAT up to 2100+ if it’s not already. Other than that I think you’re set.

you REALLY think you have the possibility of not making it?
We are talking about H&SS here. 3.6 gpa is the average.
Your ACT score is good enough from what I can tell.
You have a lot of extracurriculars.
1% rank.

I am no expert, but I really doubt you would get rejected.

I always thought that CMU was pretty competitive to get into? And I am not taking SATs, I just plain sucked at the PSAT (188) and any practice tests in comparison to how I do on the ACT.

Actually, if he wants to major in business, he’s applying to Tepper. Which is way, way more competitive than H&SS.

Those scores are about on par with your average Tepper applicant and aren’t really anything outstanding. It’s an exact match school. Write a good essay and get good recs, and that’ll give you the best shot possible.

Well, if you wants to major in economics, then you will apply to H&SS, which is easier to get in to, right?

Your gpa is about .33 higher than the average for tepper.
Your act score is average at CMU.
The top percentage of rank is 9% for H&SS, and you are in the top 1%.

The reason why CMU is noted for being competitive, is because of its Computer Science program (the other programs are also very hard to get in to as well).

… you don’t even go here…

CMU is noted for being competitive in far more than just CS. And although Econ is technically HSS, it is more competitive than most HSS programs such as foreign languages or psychology - it is more or less considered a facet of the TSB.

Many TSB applicants have their own startups, internships and national awards behind them when they apply. There is no guarantee that OP will get in, but as I said before, this is a match school for him and he should furnish his application to the best of his ability.

I’d say that you have an 80 - 90 % chance of getting because of your nearly perfect grades and pretty good extracurricular activities. No matter how “competitive” carnegie mellon can get, this applicant is sufficient in everything in order to give himself a chance. And lets be honest, the only place where you would have a chance of not getting in is Carnegie Mellon’s truly only world renown program - computer science. Although it may have a decent business school, i’m sure the OP qualifies for it.

Just want to chime in saying I’ve interviewed students with similar stats to the OP’s and they didn’t get in. Really, almost all the students I interview I feel are at the caliber where they’d perform well at CMU, yet I only see around a 20% acceptance rate.

If you’ve got the stats (which is seems you do), then it’s just a crapshoot if you’ll get in or not.
