Chance Me

Hi. I'm an international applicant too. I have difficulty in finding schools. My family can pay about $10k per year.

It will be more helpful if we know your nationality and the schools you are looking for. Those are the essential factors in the admission process for an int’l student in general. Solid academic results though

And please give us a little bit detail about your ECs

I’m from Viet Nam. I want to apply to some schools which offer relatively generous financial aid, preferably LACs. I haven’t decided my major yet, but I’m interested in Business, Psychology and Hotel Management.
Is it possible for me to apply to schools like Carleton, Grinnell, Bates, Oberlin, Connecticut, Davidson, Hamilton, Lafayette, Macalester,…?

And about my ECs:
I play a traditional instrument for 2 years.
I am a volunteer at the National Hospital, which means I work with the children who suffer from cancer. I am the group leader (a small group) of the project. I have been working for 2 years, about 80 hours.
I am working as a private tutor, 6 hours a week, for 2 years.
I am the vice president of the class for 3 years. We held a talent show for the school and a prom to raise funds for the orphans.
I also work as a recording volunteer at an organization which provides audio books for the blind, 2 years, 6 hours per week.
And I participate in a Dancesport club for 2 years as well as work in some other NGOs, for over a year. I guess my commitment to those NGOs are OK.

Please give some advice. Thanks :)

Your academics are well up to the mark so don’t worry about it.

Your ECs are fine as well-make sure you give details in your app and prioritize according to importance/prestige of your EC

You have a very good shot at all this LACs

Write some solid essays

I don’t think LACs offer Business or Hotel Management in undergrad so you might consider some other majors along with psychology.

Best of Luck :)

Amazing SAT score for a Vietnamese. You should add some Ivies to your list.

Thank you guys. Can you suggest some other universities that offer financial aid for international? University of Richmond or sth?
Btw, I think that studying Finance or Economics are fine too. So do these LACs offer such majors?

Try looking at Colgate University’s economics or mathematical economics program. They are generous with internationals. My ds is going there.

There are currently only six U.S. colleges which are both need-blind and full-need for all applicants, including international students. These are:

Amherst, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Yale

other schools MAY offer internationals financial aid but its not guaranteed and they may not meet FULL need… if you look at this link, you can search by state and see the average awards made to international students…

[Colleges and Schools Awarding International Financial Aid - California](California | Colleges and Schools Awarding International Financial Aid)

I am applying to Grinnell this year, but I have difficulty in writing the supplemental essay for Grinnell. If somebody can give me some information about Grinnell, or an overview, core principles,… of the school, I would really appreciate.
Thank you guys.

I really think you are a good fit for Dartmouth.

@ eastcoastochse: Why Dartmouth?
I am really interested in some colleges like Grinnell, Hamilton, Oberlin,… But, if anyone thinks that I’m good enough for somewhere else, please comment. I’m open to any suggestion.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Since u want financial aid, you should consider applying to the 6 schools soccergirlNYC mentioned.
My guess is that Dartmouth would be the easiest to get into from those 6 although it is still quite difficult.
And I think Amherst is a good fit for u too since it’s a LAC.
Why do u want to go LACs?

Harvard
Caltech
Yale
Stanford
Columbia
Dartmouth
Swarthmore
UPenn
Amherst
Williams
Duke
Cornell
Chicago
Wellesley (if female)
Lehigh
Oberlin

If you write good essays, you could probably get into Yale and Brown.Apply to all your favourites and see what happens!

I am an international student so I would prefer a small LAC where I can get personal attention and a close knit environment. I think that applying to all those top LACs or Universities and Ivies would be too confident.
And my family can contribute about $10k per year so I think it would be possible if I apply to some schools ( not Ivies but give generous Financial Aid for International, or meet full demonstrated need).
Thank you guys a lot for advice. Apart from Oberlin, anywhere else that is fine to apply to ( besides Ivies and top 10 LACs, I mean)?
