chance me?

I am a white female currently going into my senior year in high school. I live in Illinois and am hoping to attend the University of Illinois in Urbana next year as a liberal arts major. I got a 25 on my ACT, my unweighted GPA is 3.74, and I am 57 out of 655 (top 10%) in my class. However, no honors or AP classes. I have been in only two clubs (WHO club and Relay for Life) during my four years of high school and I am confident that I can get many letters of recommendation for my teachers. Do you think I have a chance of getting in?

Bring your ACT up by two points and you’ll have a good shot.

Are you looking for a particular major within LAS? You, of course, have a chance, and being in the top 10% of your class will help, but your ACT is on the low side. Here are the stats of the middle 50% of students admitted by college:

The poster above is correct. If you can take the Sept ACT, do so, and see whether you can get a slightly better score. Get your application in and complete by November 1st so you will make the priority enrollment period.

Other than hearing back earlier (assuming one is not deferred), is there a benefit to applying during the priority period? I know at some schools it’s easier to get in if you apply early - is that the case at Illinois?

Yes, there’s an advantage. Some popular programs begin to fill up, so you’re better off appying during the priority enrollment period. You may get a deferral because they want to compare you to the entire group of applications, but if you get admitted earlier (or denied) at least you’ve got more time to consider other options.

There is “some” advantage to applying earlier to UIUC but you should not assume it is a significant advantage. Your ACT score is low and Rank/GPA without honors or APs is not that great. Since you cannot change your grades (they go by grades through junior year) you should consider retaking and trying to raise ACT score.

Recommendation letters are not accepted.

Not being involved, and not a great ACT can defitinely hurt and not a difficult schedule. I’m applying to U of I next year as well with a 26 ACT, 4.3 weighted, lots of ec’s and AP/honors. My brother had a 26 ACT and applied to LAS and got in. He was very similar to me as in grades, ec’s and all that. Recommendation letters aren’t accepted. Idk it all depends. write good essays and u never know

to be brutally honest I’d say your chances are very slim. Your ACT is pretty low but your unweighted GPA is not bad. However, since your unweighted GPA is essentially your weighted GPA, it doesn’t look good. Still apply to Illinois in a major that is in LAS because they automatically consider you for DGS if they don’t think you are able to get into LAS.

I, on the other hand, think you have a pretty good chance.
