Chance me!?!

W&M is my first choice and I am concertned because i won't be able to take calculus before i graduate. I will apply ED.

instate/ NoVA
Mexican Female
GPA 4.14
SAT 1200
6 APS (US, Lang, Spanish, Gov't, Lit, Environmental Science)
I've taken four years of a language and physics, biology and chemistry.
I participate in a lot of clubs and honor societies with some leadership positions and an editor of my school's newspaper. 150+ volunteer hours and work experience.

any advice?

If you cannot take calc what AP are you taking senior year? Taking calc is not a requirement for W&M but we do recommend you take math all four years and pursue pre-calc or AP Stats if calc isn’t an option.

Hard to assess your GPA without knowing what school you attend but we’re guessing you have mostly As which is good.

We might recommend that you consider taking the SAT again in October. While a 1200 (Critical Reading + Math) is an okay score, our middle 50% range is 1250-1450 so you’re a tad below that at the moment. We take your best Critical Reading and best math scores (even if they’re from different dates) and combine them into your best composite score. Generally, October SAT results do come in in time to be considered during ED. Just note on your app that you are taking the Oct. exam.

Be sure to share your heritage with us. W&M seeks to build a diverse class and we are interested in whatever interesting background/perspective a student can bring.

Consider doing a fall interview if you didn’t do one over the summer. Interviews allow you to add personality to your app. You can sign up beginning Sept. 1 and you just have to interview before the Nov. 1 ED deadline.

Applying ED can be helpful as our pool is much smaller making it easier for any applicant to stand out.

Hope this helps! If you want more advice, check out our recent Admit It! blogs ([W&M Blogs Admit It!](Admit It!, Author at The William & Mary Blogs)) on all aspects of the application.

W & M Admission thanks for the advice. As a rule, do you prefer pre-calc over AP Statistics?

Between those two classes it’s really six on one, half a dozen on the other. We like pre-calc because it’s a pre-cursor for calc which you may need to take at W&M and additionally we like to see students go beyond algebra II before taking an AP math. On the other hand, AP Stats is an AP class and a challenging one. Our first choice (if calc is not an option) is for students to take both pre-calc and AP Stats. If that’s not possible, it’s really up to the applicant which of the two they take.

Can you take the ACT? Lots of people I know scored way better on the ACT than the SAT.

Good luck!

I will definitely consider taking the ACT. Thanks for all the information!

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like you can take the ACT in time for ED. The September date is next Saturday (9/10) and the registration deadline was in August. They have an Oct. date (10/22) but generally those scores are not released in time to be considered for ED.

Best bet would likely be to take the SAT in October (those scores do usually arrive in time to be considered during ED).
