I'm also applying for merit scholarships.

I've just started considering applying to Vanderbilt, so any outside information would be helpful!

i think you have a VERY good chance. In fact, you can probably get into school much better than Vanderbilt (UPENN, Cornell, JHU). Regardless, you’re an excellent candidate

wanderers, agree…Cringe worthy post re UPenn, Cornell and JHU being much better schools. oy.
Good luck getting in to Vanderbilt. Good luck getting into the Ivies. Vanderbilt has more merit scholarships than the Ivies and Hopkins and I wish you the best of luck with your merit essays. Vanderbilt has fantastic need aid, as do all the Ivies.

I notice you made the state symphony orchestra and as the parent of two classical musicians, I know that is a significant achievement. I hope you are getting clear on your future plans re maintaining on your instrument. You have to audition for the Vanderbilt Orchestra after you move into the dorms if you are not a Blair student. Sounds like you could earn a chair and that might be great fun for you. Because Vandy and Hopkins and Rice have conservatories, the orchestra is selective and has high standards for practice hours.

I am applying to more selective but most of them don’t offer merit scholarships. I don’t qualify for aid become of my family’s income but regardless, 60k a year is a lot of money to pay.

I have visited Tennessee and parts of the Vanderbilt campus, and I’m probably the most hesitant simply because of the Southern culture. I noticed Vanderbilt only has 6% of Asians.

Vanderbilt is not a safety school, even with your lovely stats. Put heart into your essays and apply for merit aid.

Also, I wouldn’t worry about the Southern Culture at Vandy or the lower percentage of Asians. Tons of my son’s friends are Asians, including two different students whose families he has already visited in NYC and NJ. He is southern. That is what college is for…Wait till you see what your options are before fretting about the lower number of Asians. Asians at Vanderbilt are excelling and Vanderbilt has so much to offer. You can decide in April if you would rather be on the West Coast with many Asians at a place like UC Berkeley or in a New England Ivy. Merit money also is so elusive. And you just never know. Our son took his merit offer at Vanderbilt and never looked back even though he had little interest in Vanderbilt based on what he read in books.
