Please let me know what you think my chances are of getting into Michigan

BC to my knowledge doesn’t post average admitted UW GPAs though visiting the results threads of the last couple of years and looking over the common data set a reasonable guess would be around 3.75. If true, your 3.8 makes you “average”.

The bigger problem are your standardized test scores. You don’t provide detail but even a super-scored ACT of 29 puts you at the 25th%-tile for BC. You don’t provide any real detail regarding, sports, arts or any other extra-curricular activities though if those hours were eaten up by your jobs that may be an acceptable explanation.

Further complicating things is the general belief that acceptance standards to the Carroll School of Management are even tougher than the overall BC population. As a result, barring some extenuating circumstances we haven’t heard about I think that BC-GSOM is going to be a reach.

Since you inadvertently asked about Michigan and since I live in Ann Arbor I’ll throw in a bonus assessment. Regrettably the story isn’t much better there. The average UW GPA at Michigan is over 3.75 and the 25th%-tile ACT is 27. With it’s higher acceptance rate I think you have a better chance at Michigan but I doubt you will be a pre-admit to the Ross School of Business (I personally know three students from last year’s Ross pre-admit applicant pool. All were at least 3.8/ACT 32, all were admitted to Michigan but none pre-admitted to Ross), so if accepted you’d come to campus with no guarantee that you’d be accepted into the program as a sophomore. The good news is that Michigan loves out of state students, the bad news is they love them because they pay full ($45K+) prices and they get offered little if any merit aid.

Thanks Vince, The act details are 28 in english, 33 math, 27 reading, 27 science. Do u think the good math score will help since I want to major in accounting ?

Does a 33 Math ACT help? It certainly doesn’t hurt, but you’re in competition with everyone in the pool. So the question becomes why should they choose you over someone with a 33 math and a 30 overall ACT? That’s where ECs, essays and recommendations come into play.

Dear surfer101 : When reading your scoring breakdown on the ACT, I had a very different interpretation from the value of the 33 score in the Mathematics section. The middle 50% of the admitted class scores a composite 30-33. This means that the 25th percentile is at a 30 and the 75th percentile stands at a 33. Now, I accept that the scoring is not smooth, but let’s assume linearity for a minute. This means that each quartile covers about 2 points on the ACT.

Why is that number important to this discussion? This would place the “zeroth” percentile at a ACT composite of 28.

Now, coming back to your scoring breakdown, this would mean that 75% of your section scores are bottom quartile … or below. Hence, the 33 Math score is not what really stood out - it was your other scores that are providing a major roadblock here.

While I would advise you to continue forward with your application, I see you as a major stretch candidate right now.
