Hey I figured I'd post a short version of my stats for transferring

3.93 at JMU first semester (member of 4 or 5 clubs- actively involved)
Pre med Psych Major

3.65 in high school with 1980 sat

Lots of extra-cirruculars and aps

I want to transfer into UVA, Georgetown, Rice, or Vandy. Do those seem like a good match and are there any others you would suggest?

Your hs stats still matter a lot, and so, I think Georgetown is probably a very high reach.

Are you in-state? I think UVA is reasonable.

Rice and Vandy are high matches. You’re going to be in the middle of the pack, I think, so it could go either way.

You have a good GPA, don’t get me wrong, but you’ve only been in college for a semester.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I am in state. Do you think it would be better to keep my grades up and wait to apply after my second semester?

Why would you transfer? You’re doing premed, keep up the good GPA and do great on the MCAT and go to a good med school. Competition at Georgetown and Rice especially will lower your gpa.

I also think you would be more competitive as a rising junior transfer applicant. Maybe you should wait?

I transferred from a state school to Vanderbilt this past fall and I applied to Rice as well. Rice was my absolute dream school going into the transfer process as I have many friends there. I had somewhat similar stats to yours that you posted in addition to a connection to an admissions board member (an informal phone interview and a rec letter) and was rejected. Rice’s transfer rate is incredibly competitve considering how small the student body is. Also, make sure you research housing opportunities at these schools. I know for a fact that Rice puts all of their transfers off campus.

As for Vanderbilt, it is definitely a transfer-friendly school and just an amazing place to be overall. Nashville is a wonderful lively city that has plenty to offer. The professors i’ve encountered are all extremely helpful and dedicated. The social scene is amazing as well–I’ve made some great friends both transfer students and non-transfer students.

This is something else to keep in mind about Vanderbilt–they are tearing down an entire quad of dorms at the end of this academic year. This is where they currently house the majority of transfer students. I’m not sure if this will affect the transfer admission rate this upcoming year.

Thanks Vandytransfer! I just checked this now, and am waiting to hear back for my transfer decision. Vanderbilt seems like a great place. I’ve got my fingers crossed.
