Chance me

Can anyone chance me for these universities:
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Yale University (legacy?)
Brown University
Johns Hopkins
Harvard University

I recently submitted my application to these schools. Here are my stats:
Note: I'm studying in a Canadian high school.

GPA: Unweighted 3.875/4 Weighted 4.75/5 (my grade 11 year)
Took most honours available at my school in my grade 11 year:
Honours Chemistry, Biology, French, English, Physics, Math
Currently taking:
AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Physics, AP English, AP Calc
In terms of GPA, ranked 1/340 in my school
In terms of percent, ranked 38/340 (Canadian schools base ranks solely on percents)

SAT I: 1960 overall (710 Math, 700 Writing, 550 Critical Reading, 10 essay)
I'm weak in critical reading because I have difficulty understanding what the authors are trying to say
SAT II: 710 Math Lv II, 650 Bio E

Reccs: pretty good, from AP Chem teacher, AP Bio teacher, AP Calc, AP English (only using AP Chem and AP Bio reccs since I think those were the best ones)

EC's:
- Track and Field - grade 12 year
- Cross country - grade 12 year
I wish i had started involvement in sports earlier, would have looked better on my app, but I was loaded with courses in my grade 11 year although my grade 9 and 10 years were slack since I was lazy then.
- Key Club - help for Haiti, etc
- Food Bank, Local Hospital fundraising

Work:
Burger King - 12 to 16 hours a week during school year, full time during school breaks (to save up for university)

Personality: enjoy art, designed chem shirt for chem students in school

What do you think?
my community involvement isnt much mainly because of my courseload and work

bummpppp worried

That 550 CR is really hurting your chances. And your SAT IIs aren’t extremely strong. Everything else is fine, and I suppose it’s up to your essays. I think you have good shots for UCLA, and perhaps UC Berkeley.

I wish you the best of luck, because it may just be dependent on that.

Is my CR score really going to affect my application a lot? I know US schools sort of focus on SAT scores, but I’d think they would consider that I’m a Canadian. Also, do Canadians receive any sort of bump on their applications? I’m just wondering because here in Canada, everything revolves around grades and schools tend to be more strict and harsh when giving out grades.

Sadly, the US does focus more on CR and Math. However, you still have a good chance if your English grades and your written essays are solid. It’s even more understandable if you speak another language besides English. As far as international students, the boundaries are never set, so I can’t say for sure Canadians will receive any sort of “bump” (but you might, so hope for that!) :)

Oh I definitely hope there is a “bump” for us Canadians. My situation is, I was born in California but I moved to Singapore where I studied mainly Mandarin and some English. I didn’t come to Canada until grade 6, even then the main language I speak at home is Mandarin even though my parents knew English. As for my English grades, they aren’t spectacular. I’m currently receiving 83% as of AP Lit and 88% for English 12 (double credit course, 5% bump on the regular with no bump on the AP). Last year I took English Honours and got around 88%, what do you think of that?

My school is very competitive in the AP courses, I’m barely scraping an A in 2 of them and Bs in the others. :frowning: Like I said, teachers here are strict in giving out grades

Now there’s a hook I didn’t see. That situation (if it was properly explained on your application) will shine more light on you. I assumed you were born in Canada, and have lived in the English-speaking part of Canada for your life. ;)

Certainly, you have more of a chance than I had previously said. I would add JHU to a school of a decent chance. But the other three schools you applied to (Harvard, Yale, Brown) are really hard to say for anyone.

I think ucla fits you more than the other ones. you’re really smart! and you seem well rounded.

Sorry if it wasn’t clear but I was born in California, and lived in Canada since grade six, also im asian american
do I have any chance to get into Yale because of legacy? or no?

^SAT way too low, plus ur too fat

Good GPA/ class rank.

Why didn’t you take any AP classes in junior year? Without AP scores it is very difficult to assess competitiveness of your school, since you cannot post average SAT scores or numbers of National merit commended and semifinalists from your school. Your standardized test scores also do not inspire confidence. Finally, you should know that being Asian American does not help in the admissions process.

yeah I know that :frowning: colleges tend to think all asians do well in school and have excellent applications.
I can take the January SAT but I don’t think it’ll be worth it, if I even were to make improvements it wouldn’t be much.
also, I didn’t think of taking AP courses in my junior year, I was already loaded with honours courses then. back in grades 9 and 10 i wasnt much interested in school, will colleges think about that, maybe waitlist me to see my final scores?

can anyone tell me if any of those schools are reaches to me?

You have a shot. That CR is REALLY killing you though. I hope that as long as your language situation is made clear somewhere on your app colleges will make allowance for that score. The ECs are alright, but as you said, you focused on academics, so academics will have to be the selling point of your application.
You might get stonewalled at the UCs if only because you are an out-of-state applicant. The rest are going to be serious crapshoots with your best shot at the Yale legacy.

Lots of luck! Care to chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1276395-post-application-chances-top-schools.html

I focussed a lot on academics and work because im trying to save up for my own tuition fees since my mom will be paying for four children in university by september of 2012, which is why i havent had much volunteer, although I’m currently spending a bout an hour to two in key club eachweek on volunteer in addition to joining track and field as of my gr12 year.

what do you think the admissions will say about that? it kind of sounds as if I’m “in need of help” which isn’t the point I wish to send across

also what do you mean by crapshoots? O_O havent heard that word before, as for UCs what do you mean by stonewalled? sorry my vocab isnt broad :/
