Chance Me.

Hi guys! I'm applying to UIUC, Gtech, UMich, Harvard, Upenn, UCB, UCLA, UCSB, UCSD, UTAustin, MIT, Stanford, CMU, Cornell, Princeton (top 10) for
ECE, RD as an international applicant. I study under the Indian system, so anything
near 96 out of 100 is quite rare.

Grades, tests scores etc:
Marks:
93.4/100 in 12th
93.4/100 in 11th
9.6 GPA in 10th
95~ in 9th
SAT: 800 CR, 740 Math (lol), 760 Writing. 2320 superscored.
SAT Subject Tests: 800 Math, 800 Physics, 800 Chemistry

Courses: For the Science stream (in which I'm enrolled), the subjects come as a pack, with a list of
the courses below:
Maths with calculus
Physics, with calculus
Chem, with calculus
English
Computer Science

Plus I'm in a special program which trains kids for a special exam for entrance into Engg
exams in India. More than 500,000 students write this exam, and only 8,000 are selected.
I'm on track to be one of those 8,000. =D

Academic Awards:

Top of my class in Junior year, out of like 500 students.
Top 1% of my class in 9th grade.
Top in the English International Benchmark Tests conducted by the Australian Council for
Educational Research in 10th in the entire Middle East.
Top in my country in Math and English in the same tests in 9th grade.

Extracurriculars:
1st position in national level quiz bowls, and won quite a few school level ones too.

Important member of school soccer team which finished third in a national level interschool championship.(Important as in the team would probably have leaked quite a few more goals without me)

Part of the school table tennis team.

MUN in 11th grade, but didn't really like it. =P President of the quiz bowl society in my school, which basically trains students for national
level quiz bowls.

Essays: All of them are pretty good, or so my teachers tell me.

Community work: ~60 hrs last summer teaching underprivileged Indian kids the basics of using a computer.

Ethnicity: Indian male, international, no fin aid. Thanks in advance!

Bump 10 char

Don’t you mean that your SAT score was a 2300? (Unless you made a mistake in presenting individual scores).

You sound like you are a really well-rounded applicant! And international never hurts. I"m sorry you didn’t like MUN! It’s a great club…quiz bowl is my favorite though haha I wish I was as talented as you are though! Those awards would really help my apps!

UIUC, Gtech, UMich, UCB, UCLA, UCSB, UTAustin,UCSD: All no problem. I would be shocked if you did not get into every one of these (Berkely is hardest out of the bunch, but still.
CMU,Cornell: Really good chance. Like 75%ish, especially with your scores and this special exam thing
Harvard, Upenn,Princeton,Stanford: Decent chance. I’d say over 50%.
MIT: You don’t have anything particularly outstanding in science/tech. 35-40% chance IMO.

@sparrowo3o

no actually I took the SAT a second time and did better on Math, so I have a 2320

@latinisfun

I did send a video of something I made to MIT, but I guess everyone does something like that. I think my essays convey my passion for science.

Oh sorry I missed the superscore part. It was viewed via cellphone and it was overlooked. You have pretty good chances at non-Ivies mentioned. It’ll be harder since you are international, but I am sure you recognize that. Make sure to ‘let your colleges know’ about your level of interest. If you make your number 1 school know your level of interest in them, your chances of acceptance will be higher. Ivies are reaches for everyone, but you have a solid resume.

Thanks guys for the input.

Bump 10char

First of, the most important question seeing your an international: are you applying for aid?

If yes, then your chances for the UC’s, Umich, Gtech are decent at best say around 40%. For Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Princeton, I’ll be honest with you, your chances are bleak. HPSM are giving you their money and their going to give it to the best for example olympiad winners, nationally-ranked sports players, or people that have a really unique story to tell.

You are qualified. There’s no denying that. I’m a US citizen living in India and I’m familiar with the Indian grading system but are you SSE, CBSE, or ICSE? Nevertheless in either one your grades post no hindrance.

As for your extracurriculars, they’re good but unfocused. The JEET that you’re training for isn’t important. They don’t care whether you get into the IIT’s at least for undergrad (it’s a different story for postgrad). Not only are they unfocused but, while good, I can’t see that one thing you have a passion for. So for these top ones I say your chances are around 5%. And in reality, that’s true for all of us as the official admit rate is somewhere around 6.5%.

If you don’t apply for aid, your chances go up. Everything other than HPSM or the ivies I would say 55-60% and HPSM- around 7-10%.

One pice of advice: Believe in yourself. No matter where you go, I’m sure you’ll do well. Good luck.

Can you chance me?

Nocensure

I’ve mentioned that I’m not applying for fin aid. I don’t really have much idea about chances, so not going to try. Sorry.

Based on successful international applicants I know,

UIUC: yes
Gtech: yes
UMich: yes
Harvard: no
Penn: maybe
UCB: yes
UCLA: yes
UCSB: yes
UCSD: yes
UTAustin: yes
MIT: no
Stanford: no
CMU: yes
Cornell: maybe
Princeton: no

Could you post your results when they’re released? Hope you prove me wrong with the top schools!

thanks 082349,

Lers hope I do get into Stanford, really want to go there.

BTW, I’ve visited Stanford, and my aunt did grad school there, so does that count for anything?

Minimally, I would say. Stanford is really bad with internationals requiring financial aid.

@ 082349

I’ve mentioned in the 1st post that I do NOT need financial aid. I knew that Stanford was need-aware, so I didn’t ask for aid.

It’s truly a testament to how much state schools love full pay intnls. Where are you going?

^I know quite a few full pay intls rejects. The OP has really strong scores.
Top 1% in school, solid A grades, 800s on subject tests, 2300+ SAT,couple of national top awards…
