I'm a Filipino-American female about to be a senior at a non-competitive high school.

My GPA is a 3.8UW/4.6W. ACT 30, SAT 1880. (Please don't judge from this alone, I know it's not good.)

The AP's I've taken are:
World (3)
US History (waiting)
Psychology (waiting)

My senior year schedule is:
AP Calc AB
AP Gov/economics
Physics honors (no AP available)
AP Literature
AP Biology
AP Human Geography
Eurhythmics/Instrumental Ensemble (colorguard)

I've taken other college classes but they are dual enrollment (English Comp & Lit, and College Algebra and Stats)

I've only gotten 3 B's so far (in College English Lit, AP US, and College stats)

I've been the marching band's colorguard captain for 2 years, I'm the vice president of NHS, the president of Students Working Against Tobacco and the president and founding member of Drug-Free Youth (community organization). I'm also a competing member in the Academic Olympics, I'm in MAT, and Key Club.

I have community service hours doing community advocating with SWAT and D-FY and for assisting the local middle school in their S.T.E.M. program, T.S.A club, and technology education class, as well as being a "counselor" in the middle school's mini-colorguard camp. I have about 300 hours doing this.

Which school(s) do you want to apply to? It makes a big difference for admissions purposes.

Engineering, sciences

I’m far from an expert on the admission here, and I’m not as familiar with the engineering department as I am with the science department. I would submit your ACT instead of your SAT–your ACT’s a tiny bit low but probably decent by the admittedly very rigorous standards CMU has, but your SAT score might hurt you a little. Your GPA seems quite good. I don’t really know how much of an effect your EC’s/community service are, but they seem fine, and the 300 hours can’t hurt.

My guess is that CIT (the engineering school) and MCS (the science school) are both reaches, with MCS being a little easier. A lot depends on your recommendations and essays too. I think CMU really wants people who are capable of handling the challenging coursework, and before applying here I would do a little research and make sure you feel that you could handle the workload and difficulty, especially in the engineering department. If you think you could handle it, I would try to prove to them that you can on your application. Any good results in math/science competitions would look excellent, and if you did well in Mu Alpha Theta that would probably be good also. You also need to take math and science SAT subject tests, and a good score on these would be very helpful.

In any event, congratulations on a successful high school career!

I will probably take SAT Math II in October but I haven’t taken any good science courses yet and I feel I wont do good. I tried to take the Physics test without taking the course but doing a month of brief self study and I scored a 570.

Also, I won my school’s math competition my junior year so I could use that to my advantage.
