Chance me

Thanks for giving me your attention. First of all, I'd like to say that I'm a normal anxious teenager constantly stressing over college. Looks Around And so are almost ALL of you. In return for your feedback, I will take a look at your posts as well and comment on them. I will not post one-liner's or simple platitudes. Similarly, I also don't want any one-liner's as well. They only increase anxiety and stress.

Future colleges:
1. Duke
2. UT Austin

I want to become a doctor. So, recommend more colleges you think are good for pre-med. I'm thinking about majoring in Bioengineering. I realize my SAT score is pretty low and I'm working hard to get it to 2250+. Also, I know my EC's aren't exactly plentiful as well. So far, I'm pretty confident that I will be admitted in UT Austin and know that my chances for Duke are pretty slim. Give me your opinion!

Oh yea, I forgot to add AP scores
APUSH: 4
AP Chem: 5
AP Calc BC: 5

SAT 2 Scores (If they even matter, I know UC’s have stopped looking at them)
Math 2: 800
Chem: 800
US History: 750

Ap scores arn’t part of most admissions processes. Austin is easy to get into and duke isn’t.

No Austin is not easy to get into

OOS Austin is just as hard to get into as Duke is
If you aren’t top 8% of you class instate Austin is a reach for you.

47% acceptance vs 15% acceptance and people with 1500 sat scores can get into Austin but not duke.

You have to be ■■■■■■■■ to think Austin is harder to get into.

ITs probably because im not familiar with your ECs but they seem a little thin to me, or at least hard to judge here. What is your GPA/ rank and are these the hardest classes at your school? Ive heard its pretty to get into Austin if youre OOS. not sure about Duke, id probably consider it a reach with the SATs, but good luck.

Hey highschoolkid711… shut up.

You act like a pretentious ass. First, you probably won’t get into UT or Duke and second, you are too cocky for your own good. You act like your doing us a favor by chancing us and that we are obliged to chance you.

lolol.

if you’re out of state i have heard that ut austin is relatively difficult to get into, but nothing like duke i’d say. i’m in state and ut austin in my opinion is easy to get into. and 2050 isn’t low. but could be higher. and all your grades are aweshum poshum. i think you could get in ut austin honestly. i don’t know about duke, probably wif a kick ass essay you could

Did my comments evoke a negative response when you read them comrade stewfoo412?

How do I come off as a pretentious ass? I really would like to know. If it is because I stated that my school is in the top 100 USHS, then BELIEVE me I would rather not go to my current HS at all. Throughout the school, the atmosphere and competitiveness is pervasive. THis often leads to students boasting about how little sleep they get every night. For example, “You got 8 hours of sleep last night? Pffft slacker, I got 6 hours”. Also, believe it or not, a 2050 SAT score is considered on the low end at my school. All in all, the reason why I wanted you to know the rank of my HS is because I wanted you all to realize that my APs/Test Scores don’t really set me apart from any of my classmates at all. Thank you all for your posts!

My school is ranked higher than yours bro. I go to George Mason HS by the way and the atmosphere at george mason hs isn’t even competitive.

Well your school isn’t a top 100 overall is it? Second, you don’t understand how they ranked the schools, they did it by counselors views. Furthermore, it doesn’t take into consideration elite boarding schools like exeter, or many private schools.

UTs OOS admissions % is probably lower than Dukes overall

Why are you trying to compare its overall to Duke when I specifically stated OOS?

I wasn’t aware that DECA chapters were ranked…

@ bryantu … u should apply early action to one of those schools … just to boost your chances … and i agree take the SAT over and aim for like round 2100 ish range … and maybe add another school on your list like a safety just in case lol …
P.s bryantu … U have some real rude people commenting ( would say much worse if it wasnt here) so to all those rude just shut the **** up like all he/she asked for was a chance and she made the title like tht to get your attention and she talked about her schools ranking because it looks better to colleges if u went to a very nice school rather than a very uneducated school … and if he/she thinks a 2050 is low than let he/she think tht, some people have high expectations for themselves … clearly u do not have high expectations … Is her SAT a little low for those school ? Yes but she did say she was retaking it …

Greetings! First off, I have to say to OP, please, for your own good, ignore any rude or off topic remarks in this thread. You come off as very professional in this post, and it is unfortunate you have so many rude people commenting.

Now, to the meat of your application:

Strengths: I think it goes without saying, but your GPA is superb. Though you have one B, you still have a great transcript (assuming you are taking the most difficult classes your school offers – context is important). Especially if you are within the top 5% or so of your class, you should stand out academically. And, I’ll discuss your EC’s latter in this post, but you clearly do how a large amount of dedication to your EC’s, and colleges always prefer quality over quantity. On a side note, I want to congratulate you on registering 1000 voters; I myself have spent countless hours registering voters, and I know how long it can take!

Toss-Ups: In analyzing your application, there are a lot of toss ups for me, things that I don’t really call strengths but don’t call weaknesses. First off, your standardized test scores. Though they aren’t stellar, I am of the opinion that they are good enough for either of the institutions you listed. You are barely in the 25-75 percentile for scores at Duke, but in it regardless, and you easily beat the average score at UT Austin (the average out of state score there is a 1914). You should try and improve your scores on your October test, but if you end up not improving your super score, don’t worry too much; your scores are good enough for either Duke or UT Austin.

Your EC’s as a whole are a tossup to me. You certainly don’t have very many EC’s, but what you have is strong. Perhaps the more concerning thing to me, though, is that none of your EC’s match up with your intended major. This is a minor flaw, but it will make it more difficult to provide evidence that you really are interested in becoming a doctor.

Weaknesses: I don’t really see any major flaws in your application, to be honest. The only possible one I could see is your AP’s. Having only taken 3 AP classes is pretty light compared to several other applicants to Duke, at least. However, this only counts as a weakness if your school offers several AP courses, or if most of the AP courses your school offers are intended for seniors. Colleges look at context, so they won’t penalize you if your school had very few AP course for you to choose from. I’ve actually only taken 3 AP classes myself, so I know what it feels like if your school doesn’t offer those courses.

All in all, I say that you should get into UT Austin fairly easily, and Duke is a low to mid reach, probably closer to the mid reach side of things. Make sure to apply to at least one safety, just in case everything goes wrong, but I do have a hard time imagining you not getting into UT Austin.

If/when you have time, I’d appreciate a chance back at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1368810-chanes-hys-among-others-thanks.html</a> . Thanks and best of luck!

@Adodie Thank you so much for your effort in creating your post. I can see that it really did take a lot of time! Probably even more time than it took for me to create this thread. To be quite honest, my ECs are indeed a toss-up. I was never really outgoing throughout my sophmore/junior year and the internship happened completely by coincidence. A couple of days ago, I registered on commonapp.org and saw the dreadful “EC” tab. The only long-standing EC I have is the Californian Scholastic Federation which lasted around 4 years, since the start of my freshman year. Currently, I want to expand my college list and (sadly) only have 2 colleges I am seriously considering so far. Those being Duke and UT Austin. If you could recommend more colleges suitable for a pre-med, I would appreciate it greatly. Moving over to your post now to comment :)

No problem, and thanks for the chance back! Anyway, I have to plead ignorance when it comes to good colleges for pre-med. However, I’d take a look at UC Berkeley, UCLA, U Michigan, and UW Madison. I really don’t know how good their pre-med programs are (heck, I don’t know how good anybody’s pre-med program is), but I wouldn’t be surprised if they had good pre-med programs, since they’re good schools in at least several other areas. I also think any of those schools would be within your reach. And, also, I wouldn’t worry too much about your EC’s – you do show amazing dedication to them. Good luck, and I know whatever happens, you’ll still get into a wonderful college! :)
