Chance Me!!!

Hello everyone! I am a junior right now. My reach schools are Princeton (which I plan to apply to early action), UPenn (Parents are alum.), Harvard, and Swarthmore

General Info:
Race: African American
Gender: Female
Income: Middle Class
Type of School: A Small Christian School
Region: A Suburb Close to Philly

Testing:
SAT: do not plan on taking
ACT: 33 composite
Eng-33
Math-32
Read-31
Sci-34
Writing- 8/12
SAT II: haven't taken yet

School:
GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.27 weighted
Class Rank: My school doesn't rank, but I'm pretty high up there.

I have taken the most rigorous curriculum possible at my school.
Freshman- I took all honors courses possible
Sophomore- all honors courses plus AP Psych (5)
Junior- all honors courses plus AP US Gov, and AP Calculus AB
Senior- plan to take all honors courses plus AP Spanish IV, Calculus BC (at a local community college), AP World History, AP English Lang and Comp

Latin- enrolled in an online course, currently in Latin II
I plan to take National Latin Exam this year. I did very well on practice tests from previous years, so I think I will score high.

Extracurriculars:

Music: Classically trained in piano (10 years) and oboe (4 years). I am very advanced in both instruments.

I am a member of my school's band (oboe), jazz band (piano), founder of a woodwind quintet. I also play in an orchestra (oboe) outside of school.

For oboe I have had some professional experience. I have played in the pit for the Music Man. This was with professional musicians I was the only student. I had some work experience accompanying a choir (The music was not a walk in the park.) and teaching at a summer chamber music camp.

For piano, I have played in multiple master classes. I scored in the top category for the national piano guild two years in a row. I auditioned and got the chance to perform in a conference on Debussy at the New England Conservatory.

Other than those things, I play at a bunch of random school events and concerts at my music school. I plan to submit music supplements to colleges.

Student Government:

School Senate (secretary for two years)

Spiritual Life Committee- I planned my school's Meet You at the Pillars event. I planned Random Acts of Kindness (which is basically a school wide Secret Santa). I also am in the process of planning worship nights on campus.

National Honors Society- 2 years

Service:

I volunteer in my church's nursery once a month. I put on a piano concert for a nursing home.

I may have forgotten some little things, but my two most time consuming extracurricular activities are there. Please Chance Me!

i think those are good reach schools and your scores are good enough to have a positive impact on your application. your extracurriculars are definitely enough and you may get in to a few of these colleges.

You just can’t pin all hopes on reach-for-anyone schools.

What’s your safety?

I agree with Catria. You need more ec’s and your act is stellar. Great job!

I do have a few safeties, I was just wondering about my reaches. Music tends to take up most of my free time, and my school puts a limit on the number of clubs you can be a part of. Even if my chances aren’t the greatest, I will always be wondering if I don’t apply…

One thing I was worried about was my ACT essay score of an 8? What do you guys thing about it?

you’re a junior you can retake the act for a better score if you want to

Another thing I’m worried about are my ECs. There are many clubs at my school, but most of them run at the same time during the middle of the school day. You can only choose one, and I am in band. However, I heard at admissions meetings that depth of contribution is more important than number of activities. I guess I’ll see because even though I don’t have a long list, I’m heavily active in all my ECs.
