Chance Me

CCC Transfer 2013

Applying: Cal, UCLA (top choice), UCSD, UCSB, UCD, UCI
Major: Integrative Biology(Cal) or Biology(UCLA, UCSD); Biological Sciences (UCSB, UCD, UCI)
Overall GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Completed
Major Prereqs: Missing Physics, LifeSci 3, LifeSci 4 (taking this summer), and LifeSci 23L.

ECs: I was a teaching assistant and tutor for General Chemistry and Cell/Molecular Biology. I also helped organize a fundraiser for the tsunami victims in Japan; we ended up raising about $11,000.

Personal Statement: I'm not really sure. I thought that they were good, but I don't how others would rate them. 7.5/10?

Additional Comments: I am also a first generation college student.

Can I get an estimate % to each school?

The pre-reqs may screw you over really bad for Cal and UCLA. Although when I check assist for the articulation of those courses to my school, there’s none. So you may luck out.

^I was thinking the same thing with the bio classes, but there isn’t an articulation…

You’re going to have to be a little more specific regarding your pre-reqs. You’ve completed the equivalent of LS1 and LS2, but are you on the quarter or semester system in CC? UCLA specifically says you need to complete a year long bio series. So were those two covered in two semesters or two quarters? Also, did you complete the ochem series? And are there any pre-reqs you’re taking now in spring?

It sounds like you’ll have everything (Math, Chem, Ochem) completed except LS3, LS4, and Physics by the end of spring, correct?

If that’s the case you should have a pretty decent chance of getting into UCLA. I’d say about 70% (it would be higher if you had the full LS series finished). As far as Berkeley, Physics is an absolute requirement for Integrative Bio, so if you don’t complete it your chance is 0%. They absolutely won’t make any exceptions even if you have a 4.0. You would’ve been better off applying to Molecular and Cell Biology, Molecular Toxicology, Molecular Environmental Biology, or Microbial Biology where physics is recommended, but not required for admission. UCSD probably 90%. UCSD admissions focuses heavily on GPA and they admit plenty of people here to Biology with missing pre-reqs. The rest practically 99%. Nothing’s a sure thing I suppose, but I think you’re easily in at the rest of the UCs.

My school runs on the semester system. As for my prereqs, I have finished my General Chem sequence and a course equivalent to UCLA’s LS 2 during my freshman year. In the summer, I took LS 1 at UCLA as a CC guest. Then in the fall, I took O Chem 1/L and am currently enrolled to finish the second semester of it this spring.

Personally, I can see why I might get rejected, but a counselor on my campus says that I should be fine (regarding my Bio reqs). I don’t fully trust what he’s saying though since it seems a bit iffy.

As for the rest of my prereqs, I didn’t think it was worth taking Physics since I wouldn’t finish the sequence by the time I transferred. Also, my CC is weird in the sense that we have one semester of O Chem as a prereq for registering for LS 3. We don’t even have a class similar to LS 23L. Finally, I couldn’t get into LS 3 this spring because most people who go into that class are juniors, seniors, super seniors, or have eops (some really unfair program that allows “disadvantaged” students to register 2 weeks before everyone). Since registration at my school relies heavily on the number of units you have taken there, it puts me at a huge disadvantage since I’m still a sophomore; that and because my CC has two other school in their system so I took some GEs at those campuses. Which explains why I’m going to take LS 4 over the summer.

Additional Comments: I am part of the Coast Community College system and have most of my units at Orange Coast College. The only classes that I have taken at Coastline and Golden West are my Arts and Humanities requirements.

I know you’ll be absolutely fine in regards to not taking the Physics series. When I was enrolled at UCLA there were a number of people that also didn’t start the series in CC that were admitted to MCDB and the some of the other majors in life science department. Also, I was admitted with 2/3rds of the physics series finished and my GPA was much lower than yours, 3.67. You should also be fine for UCSD and the other UCs in that regard. As for the LS series, I can’t really tell you. I don’t think you’ll have a problem meeting the minimum biology requirement because you did take what would be the equivalent of a full year at your CC. Unfortunately, taking LS4 in the summer isn’t going to mean much in terms of admission, but I think you should still be okay. I think given you have a perfect CC record, they’ll give you the benefit of the doubt even though you’re missing a few pre-reqs and I would be surprised if you were rejected from UCLA and any of the other UCs.

Did you have others check your personal statement?

Yeah, I had a few friends and professors review it before I sent in my application. The only real corrections they made were for syntax.
