No APs right now, but next year I will take AP English, AP French, AP Art History as well as two social studies courses that are weighted college level classes but not APs.

As far as essays go, I'm a pretty good writer and I'm in a writing for college class right now, and we had a whole unit about application essays so I'm pretty confident about that. I'm also getting recommendations from two teachers that know me really well and like me.

What are my chances as a film production major for:

Florida State
UCLA
USC
NYU
UTexas-Austin
LMU
Columbia College Chicago
Emerson

I realize my GPA's a bit low, but I don't really think it's a really good indicator of who I am as a student and a person because I've had a lot of adversity over the time I've been in high school and I'd like to think of myself as a driven, motivated student. Movies are my passion, and I really want to work with them in any way I can.

Thanks much < 3

UCLA: Reach (out-of-staters get next to no aid there)
USC: Reach
FSU: Low match
LMU: Match
NYU: Reach (NYU gives out poor aid)
UT-Austin: Reach (unless you still somehow rank top-7%)
Emerson: Match
Columbia Chicago: Safety

Are you a junior or sophomore? With no AP classes but a low GPA, this is going to be an issue for you. Try to improve your GPA, though it may be difficult as you are going to increase your course load next year. On the other hand, you will need to get much higher test scores if you really want to apply to many of the schools on your list particularly with your low GPA. Lastly, why don’t you put UWM on the list? A state flagship usually gives you a better chance.

Florida State: Match
UCLA: Reach, GPA and SAT are a little low. Try to bring them up

Maybe UWI is horrible for film or doesn’t have it…

^ UWM got one of the top 20 film programs in the world.

I’m a junior. You can’t take AP classes at my school until you’re a senior, but I did take honors English both last year and this year.

Heh, my mom is actually a professor at UWM and I live a mile from campus. I’ve been there numerous times and I don’t really like it that much, so I don’t really want to apply there.

I had a 4.0 GPA my freshman year, but a lot of crap happened in my personal life sophomore year, and my grades suffered both semesters a result and brought my cumulative down to a 3.5. Last semester this year my grades were better, but still just okay just because I’m taking a really heavy course load and it became a lot to handle. But my grades are pretty good this semester so far, and I’m trying to maintain that. I’m really loving my senior year schedule, so I’m hoping that my GPA will go up, but I don’t think colleges really use senior year GPA in the admissions process.

Depending how I do on the ACT, I may or may not take the SAT again.

Thanks everyone! Do you think if I wrote about the stuff that happened to me when I was a sophomore in a personal statement they would take that into consideration? Because as hard as I may try, I won’t get my GPA up back to where it was before.
