Chance me?

So this is my first post after finally signing up...figured i'd give it a shot after reading so many posts on this site.

I'm soon to be finishing up my junior year of high school and I am already starting to take on the pressure of applying to the following schools: Boston College, UVa, UMich, Penn State, The Ohio State University, U of Oregon, TCNJ, and University of Illinois.

Stats:
-NJ Resident
-White
-unweighted GPA - 3.98
-weighted GPA (out of 6) - 4.8
- SAT CR 500
- SAT Math 550
- SAT WS 490
- ACT: TBD (test date - June 8th)
- Rank: top 10% (probably about 10th out of 150)
NOTE: i will be retaking the SAT in the fall because i definitely underachieved :(

EC/Honors:
-National Honors Society
-National Spanish Honors Society
-Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Alumni with the completion of over 150+ volunteer hours since June 2012
-Volunteer Fire Patrol Member
-4 year varsity wrestling letter winner
-2 year varsity football letter winner (1 year as captain of team)
-4 year varsity golf letter winner (2 years as captain)
-caddy during the summer
-experience working at carwash during school year

thats pretty much all i can think of....thanks for any input

bump i am extremely curious

Your GPA and volunteering are definitely on par with the UVA, BC, UMich caliber schools. However, a 1540 SAT will absolutely hold you back. You have to shoot for at least a 2000 to have a chance of getting into the upper level schools that you are thinking of applying to.

I am unfamiliar with the other schools with the exception of Penn State, which you’d want to shoot for about an 1800.

If you feel as though you are stronger with the ACT, you’d want to try to hit about a 30.

Regardless, good luck!

If you could chance me back, I’d really appreciate it!

Your SAT score is low. Way too low for UMich. The average for UMich was near 2100 last year.

Yea I would say BC, UVa, and UMich are pretty much high reaches…I guess this post is more geared towards the other schools that I listed

Your weighted GPA is 4.8/6? Weird grading system. That being said, your GPA and SAT are way too low for UVA, the only school I can speak to being a Virginia resident. The kids who got into UVa from my school this year all had SATs around 1800-2100, top 10% of the class. And it’s even tougher for out of state applicants. That being said, your EC’s are pretty good. Maybe use parchment.com to scout out schools that are more of a match, given your stats.

Never heard of that site I’ll check it out

You can also use the SuperMatch in this site.

Update with my ACT scores in:

Composite: 24

English-22
Math-31
Reading-19
Science-23
Combined English/Reading-23

Are these ACT scores more on par with Penn State and Ohio State? I feel like the 31 shows my true strength in math much better than the 550 on the SAT

Your SAT score is around national average, while your ACT score at 24 is better (national average at 21). Nevertheless, it may still be too low for OSU and Penn State.

Thanks I appreciate it

Your weighted gpa seems low, but if your rank is within the top 10%, the actual number doesn’t matter. I know someone who has a 3.5 uw gpa, but is 2nd in their class. So, your gpa/class rank seem to be on par with those schools.

Thanks

if you get an 1800 SAT:
Boston College–match
UVA–reach
UMich–reach
Penn State–low match
The Ohio State University–low match
U of Oregon–safety
TCNJ–high safety
University of Illinois–which one?
