I come from a very poor, hispanic-dominated city in California. My district is known for bad test scores, but I go to one of the "better" public high schools around here, which is still pretty mediocare in comparison to schools in nearby districts.
Besides retaking the SAT, I plan on taking 3 subject tests as well as the ACT. I'm mostly worried about my SAT score. I made a horrible mistake and did not prep at all! I'm going to buy at least 2 SAT prep books as well as online courses.
I want to apply to UC Berkeley, Columbia, NYU, Brown, Boston U, UCLA, Stanford (highly doubt it, worth a shot), Wesleyan, etc. My fall-back schools are UC Santa Barbara, UCI and UC San Francisco.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as well as other univeristies you might think I have a shot at!!!

I want to major in Psychology and minor in English

Excellent chance for you @ UCLA…GL!!

UCSF is a medical school for medical students, not undergrads.

Don’t worry about your SAT, you have a relatively high score. Prep if you must, but don’t stress. Focus on developing your life experiences and your character. You have the background, and the story of triumph, that are few and far between. That said, apply to the colleges you want to apply to! Good luck!

Thank you!! I’m applying for Questbridge’s College Match too.

You’re in the match range everywhere except for NYU, Columbia, Stanford, and Brown! I still think you have a shot at those 4 schools as well. You’re a URM who is achieving an excellent GPA and great class rank. If you can get that SAT even to a 2100 maybe, then you have a good chance. You also have a sad story to tell that will make the admission officers sob. You rose to so much success regardless of your poor background and enormous setbacks. Well done! I really want to congratulate you for overcoming so much! If you can raise the SAT score and do well on the SAT IIs, you have a legit chance anywhere. Also, do something unique in your ECs. For example, start a non for profit that collects money for poor Hispanic children in your area, who are suffering just like you did.
Oh and one more thing, you can go to the Columbia link here on College Confidential. There is a thread there that shows the Class of 2017’s acceptances,
waitlists, and rejections. There you can see how you would compare! The same can be done for Stanford if you type it Stanford in college search! I also believe there is one for Brown University!
Great job and good luck!

Thanks and I’m pretty positive about raising my SAT to at least 2100!

Update – I got into Columbia (Early Decision)! Thanks for the help/encouragement!

Congrats, Columbia is an unbelievable school. Can I have a chance?
