Thank you !

You’ve got a lot of extracurruclars, but your grades and your test scores are all right for Maryland, but not great. Maryland has gotten more and more competitive lately. You’re out of state too? Phew. This is going to be close. Can’t say for sure. I had only slightly better stats and less impressive ECs, but I was in state. If you get in, you might get into College Park Scholars, full of kids who stood out in high school for their extracurricular involvement and diversity. Cross your fingers! It’s a wonderful school!

Oh! Almost forgot! Remember that Maryland does not look at Writing for the SAT, which unfortunately appears to be your biggest strength. That puts your SAT on the 1600 scale at 1180. For out of state, this is probably going to hurt you. Your chances rest on the edge of a knife. It’s too close to call.

Realistically speaking, your SATs (1180/1600), are going to make difficult for you to be admitted. This SAT score is well below the 25% of the years freshman class (1260), and on top of that you are out of state.

The 50% range of the admitted students SAT score has gone up every application year and it is not unreasonable to consider that it might go up again next year. I would look to add about 100 points to your combined Math/Reading to bring your score up to 1280. This will likely have you in range next year and you would stand a realistic chance to be admitted. My guess is the 25% will fall somewhere between 1250-1280 next year, with the latter numbers being more likely, which would continue the upwards trend that has been seen of late.

Your ACT is stronger, and actually does fall within this years listed range of 28-32. If you are admitted it will be because of your strong extracurriculars, solid GPA and ACT score.

With that said, I would try to take both tests again to feel better about my chances. Unfortunately at this point University of Maryland places a significant weight on test scores when considering an applicant for admission.

I would not be surprised to see you admitted as is, with the help of a well written essay, but I would not bet on it.

Best of luck!
