chance me?

I think UT Austin is my first choice and it would be awesome if someone could chance me:
White female from a VERY competitive California private school
GPA: 3.46 (I think this is unweighted but I'm not sure. Also, as I said my school is very competitive so this puts me in the fourth quintile, but my school does not technically rank so this won't be reported)
ACT: 36
SAT: 1460/2190
SAT II: Chemistry- 670, English Lit- 690, Math II- 770
Extracurriculars:
Hip Hop Dance Team 4 years, Captain this year
FBLA 2 years (the club only began my junior year), VP this year
Jazz Dance Team 2 years
~100 hours of volunteering with Relay for Life
I also run a successful Nail Art blog with ~1000 followers
Essays and recommendations will probably be strong

Other schools I'm applying too, if you could chance me for them also:
Chapman
USC
Tulane
UMiami
UCLA
UCSB

thanks!

With a 36 you are in

any second opinions?

I agree with MrDrProfessorSir. Your GPA and especially the ACT - the highest possible score - will get you in.

I’m a native texan, so I can see you getting into UT. You’re ACT is perfect

For UT the most important criteria is class rank. Even from non-ranking schools UT has a profile of the school and the class. UT will calculate a class rank for you. If you are in the 4th quartile then I think chances are very slim. The good ACT will probably not overcome the class rank.

what major?

I don’t see UT austin turning down someone with a 36.

4th quintile, not quartile, if that makes any difference… also, like i already said, my school is VERY competitive. it was ranked in the top 10 most challenging high schools in america by the washington post. will ut austin know how difficult it is and take that into account?

@Ya Ya
Communication Undeclared, second choice Undergraduate Studies Undeclared
i know the school of communication is significantly more competitive but that’s really what i’d like to do. do you think i could still be admitted to the college of undergraduate studies if im rejected from the school of communication?

randalgraves
You have great standardized test scores, and the perfect ACT will definitely boost your chance of getting accepted into UT. Your extracurricular activities that you were involved in will also boost your chance, especially since you had leadership experience. As for being rejected from the school of communication and being admitted to the college of undergraduate studies, my friend was actually in the same situation last year. He ended up being accepted into the college of undergraduate studies, I think. I believe you received a higher score on your ACT than him though, so you have a greater chance of being accepted into your college of your choice within UT. He did, however, have a few more extracurricular activities that he was involved in. If you’d like to contact him and get more information about the college of communication or the undergraduate studies, or if you’d like to know anything else about UT, then definitely let me know or send me a message!

thanks so much longhorn2255! that is all very helpful.

does anyone know if there’s anything that sets an applicant apart in particular for the school of communication? are they looking for anything specific, or does it just take higher test scores and GPA since it’s more competitive than other programs in the university? for example i wrote one of my essays about business, the arts, and critical thinking and how they are all related in my life, is that something that would show that i’m serious about my interest in that particular school?

I would think they primarily look at higher test scores and GPA, but since there are many people who apply to UT and have similar test scores and GPA, having well written essays concerning personal experience as you said will only help you more!

Have you made a visit to UT? Have you attended an information session for the college of communication? Knowing that you are out of state, a visit to the university and attending an information session might be helpful. I wouldn’t say it’s required, because it definitely is not, but it would show the advisors who run the session that you are serious about your interest in the school!

Also, I messaged you randalgraves!

randalgraves.

The College of Communication will look at your essays/ writing. Some years ago they told at their presentation that if you don’t put effort in your essays you’ll not be accepted, no matter what.

And depending on major they look at related EC (work experience, internships, academic competitions like UIL in Texas, related clubs at school etc.)
Your strongest related EC is a successful Nail Art blog with ~1000 followers. If you did not write about it in any essay, describe this activity in your resume (with link to the blog). If you have not done it (described this blog in your resume) already, try to send an updated resume.

P.S. I don’t believe it will be any problem with acceptance to communication unless your essays are bad.

uh oh, not super comforting that class rank is the first thing listed…

i’m expecting my first semester grades to be good, probably all As or at least close to that. can i send these grades in and are they likely to help me a significant amount?

anyone have any more thoughts?

pretty please?
