My essays focus on how I started computer programming in middle school and how this passion has led me to want to pursue a computer engineering degree. I discussed some of the software pursuits I took in high school.

I am applying to the engineering school for computer engineering

50% chance.

You may get in but I don’t think you’ll get direct admit to engineering. In 2012 the avg GPA for direct admit was over 4.2.

I’d say you’re a pretty solid admission to the University, regardless of whether your are IS or OOS.

As you know, engineering is a LEP (limited enrollment program), so it is more competitive. Your SAT is def in range (mid 50% average is 1320-1450 for last year’s incoming class, and was 1320-1460 the year before - they only look at CR + M).

While they didn’t post average gpa for last year’s incoming class, it was 4.2 the year before (info from the admitted students session for class of 2016). So, it looks like gpa is your possible weakness for this purpose (not a bad gpa at all, honestly just a question of average stats for the LEP).

Given your challenging course load, you may actually be ok, but it’s tough to make that call because it depends on what your competition brings to the table. LEP literally means there are limited places available for admission. Hopefully, your essays, short answers and letters of rec will help also.

One “possible” scenario is you might be one of those students that is admitted to the university, invited to honors or scholars, but not directly admitted to engineering. But, honestly, that’s not something anyone can predict with any accuracy, nor am I saying I think that’s what will happen. I am just laying it out there based on decisions threads in the past - more of an fyi for you and other students looking at this thread, that this is something that can and does happen (people often expect that if they are invited to honors or scholars, they “should” be admitted to their LEP, but that is not the case).

IF that’s what happens, it honestly is NOT a big deal since it is easy for engineering students to reapply as an “in-school transfer.” Unlike business, engineering transfers are NOT competitive but based entirely upon satisfactorily meeting the requirements (certain classes with certain grades). My son has several friends that had that happen and all are now officially in the school of engineering, no problem.

Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Your stats say your chances are 40-60 that you’ll be admitted to the university. Have a Plan B.
