Hi, I am a female Chinese Junior in high school.

AP classes:
Sophomore-AP Chinese (5)
Junior- AP chem, AP bio, AP English, AP Psychology, AP US history
Senior- AP English, AP Stats, AP Environmental, AP World History

ACT-33 (I only took it once, planning on retaking)

Extracurriculars: Drama Club full time fall and winter (head of sound in fall and actor in winter), figure skating coach year round, I also have a job at the ice rink year round, skating competitions for the past 5 years, skated in the nutcracker on ice for the past 3 years, president of chikumbuso for 3 years (volunteer program to raise money or orphaned kids in Africa), secretary of Key Club, Art Editor in Fine Arts Magazine, singer in a Capella group sweet harmony

Volunteer hours: more than 400 at least (sorry I'm too lazy to count how many exactly)

Do you think taking only 4 APs senior year would be enough? I plan to continue with all my extracurriculars throughout senior year. I really like Tufts but I'm not sure if I am committed enough to apply ED in September because it would be a financial strain if I didn't get any money them.

I think 4 AP classes is plenty, though they aren’t the hardest ones except for APUSH. I also wonder where your math is at, or are you in precalc your senior year. If you want to major in a technical field, that seems a little problematic.

@Daddio3 I am currently in Pre-calc. I could take AP Calc next year but since I am planning on majoring in chemistry I will probably have to retake it in college anyways. Do you think it would be better to take AP calc next year?

My son is a sophomore in Tufts majoring in chemistry. Why do you think you’ll have to retake calc in college? He took BC calc in senior year and is not planning to retake it. He just took Stats this past semester and it was a really easy class. An easy A. In general BC calc will look much better on your application then Stats for most colleges you will apply to BTW chemistry is fabulous in Tufts. My son is really enjoying his Proffessors. The research opportunities are tremendous. He’s been involved in a really great research project since his freshman year. You will definitely have to retake AP chem but it’s still good to take in high school as it will make it easier in Tufts. If you have any questions about chemistry in Tufts feel free to post here or send me a msg. Do you know if you’re doing regular chemistry or ACS certified?

I think if you are majoring in math/science/engineering, a lot of higher-end schools will expect you to take a hard math (not AP stats) and a science senior year. I called an admissions office for his reach school and confirmed as much. AP Enviro is fine since you took chem and bio junior year, but I would add AP Calc AB to your schedule, perhaps instead of stats. It will be a harder schedule for sure, but will look much better on your application than only having taken math through pre-calc. Remember if you take the SAT 2 Math level 2 to study your probabilities, though, since you now won’t get them from the stats class.

Alice, I think you should take calculus. AP Stats is a very watered down version of statistics. At our school the teacher finishes the curriculum in November and then teaches real stats after that. (Which involves teaching the class some calculus.) Some kids find they need to take Calc again in college, but many don’t. Usually you can take a placement test to see where you stand. Even my IR major kid took AP Calc as a senior.

Thank you for all the feedback! I definitely think Calc is the better decision now that I know I probably won’t have to retake it in college! Thanks again :)
