Chance Me?

I'm currently a junior. I would like to go to University of Michigan Ann Arbor, but I would also like to get into Wayne State's Accelerated Program or the Ivy League. My chances for Ivy League are most likely slim, but I would like to hear from others as well. I'm also Indian, if it matters.

GPA: 3.97/4.00
AP's taken: AP Chemistry and English
AP's that I plan on taking: Bio, BC Calc, Physics
General Classes taken:
     Math: Geometry(9th grade), Algebra 2, Pre Calculus(Junior)
     Science: Bio, Chem, Physics(currently in)
Social Studies: US History and Geo, Civics, World History and Geo(currently in)
English: 9th and 10th grade but am taking AP now instead of 11th grade English
ACT: 28. I've taken the ACT once freshman year, twice sophomore year, and now twice this year. The scores were 23, 21 and 25, and then a 26 and now a 28. I couldn't get the hang of taking the test until the state required test, giving me a 28. I expected higher but I really don't feel like retaking the test. Should I, to get above a 30, if I can?

The only weak link is your ACT score, so yes, take it again. What about Your SAT score? I would say that otherwise, you are in pretty good shape. I’m no expert on U Michigan Ann Arbor, but I would say that you are probably a match, provided you get that ACT score up.

Chance me back?

I assume you are from Michigan. Since you have taken ACT so many times, chances are you won’t make much improvement if you retake it again. As of now, Wayne State would be your matching school. For UMich LSA, it would be a high match for in state since your GPA is good. Your ACT is below the 25% of admission, but I have seen in state students admitted with even lower score. For Ivies, you can save the money.

@Nflpackers96 I don’t know if I should take the SAT.
@billcsho I actually started taking practice tests two weeks prior to the state required test, and that’s when I finally started seeing my high 30’s. They were Princeton Review Practice Tests. I assume that I could score higher, but if I get accepted to U of M, I see no point. What would you recommend me doing? Strengthening anything? I also wish to be accepted into the some of the Ivies, but going would be a decision I would make if U of M or Wayne State’s Accelerated Progam didn’t accept me.

Two weeks of practice is minimum. You should have done a lot more practice test even before your first attempt. What is the point of retaking the test without expecting improvement. With ACT at 28 really jeopardizes your chance at UM. I would not really count on it. The mid 50 ACT is 29-33. Chance is even lower if you intend to study engineering (mid 50 ACT 31-34).

@billcsho I took the Princeton Classes in sophomore year, but there was no improvement. Like I said, I got the “hang” of taking the test this year; however, I did regret not practicing enough. I also plan on going into PreMed, not engineering.

I often found those test prep classes just get you started and not really get you ready for the test. The prep class is actually optional, while practice tests are essential. My D did 20-30 practice tests before she reached a plateau in scores.

Bump

ACT will kill you. Everything you have is great but ACT will hurt. Try to get it up to a 31 and you should be good for UMich

You should really try to improve your ACT score and take some SAT 2 tests if possible. The GPA, SAT/ACT are the first cutoff for almost any college/program.

Thanks to the both of you.
