Chance Me

Hi! I’m new to cc and I’m excited to do my first chance me thread! My stats are phenomenal but Ive fallen in love with SLO and I really want to know if you guys think I can get in. I would like to go into their business major.

CSU GPA: 3.83 W
SAT: 1810/2400 1160/1600
ACT: 32
Hooks: URM, First-Gen, Low-income
Extracurricular: ASB, VP of Senior Class, CSF

And does Cal Poly look at 9th grade grades? I had a terrible freshman year so that would lower my GPA. Thank You!

So you can recalculate your gpa - yes, SLO does include 9th grade.

SLO prefers the ACT over the SAT so I would only send in the ACT. Your ACT is above the average of 29, but GPA is below the average of 3.95. They also have a complicated algorithm giving bonus points for extra Math, Science, Language and English classes. Check their website to get the particulars.
I would say SLO is probably a High Match. It has become increasingly competitive for the last several years. Many of son’s friends were rejected from SLO but accepted by UCLA and UCB.
Good Luck to you.

The algorithm for admissions is pinned to the top of this forum - titled “keys to the kingdom”.

Although the web page says the ACT is the preferred test, there are no penalties for submitting an SAT over an ACT. A phone call to admissions confirmed they don’t really care either way. One should submit the better score, in your case, the ACT.

BTW, that ACT is equivalent to a 1420/1600 SAT (SLO doesn’t use the writing section). If you are planning on retesting for any reason, I’d focus your efforts on ACT. If you did an equal amount of prep for each, the results suggest the ACT suits you better. It’s very common for a student to have discordant results on the two tests. Play to your strengths.

Good luck.

Ok so my recalculated GPA is a 3.6 GPA but I’m retaking the ACT and will hopefully score a 34 or 35. Do they give extra points if your first gen?

They give extra points for each parent who didn’t graduate from high school.

my dad graduated but my mom didnt but got her GED does that count?
