Hooks:
I’m an African American female going into neurobiology. I’m also first generation from a single parent home. My dad never finished high school, My mom never went to college. Not sure of my moms income but I’m pretty sure it’s around 40k, maybe less.

You should investigate questbridge.org. Incredible benefits – lots of work but worth it.

But to be frank, a 27ACT severely limits you for the context of Brown. Good luck

@asiasmith1‌ if you are seriously considering Brown ED, you should definitely take a look at Questbridge like T26E4 says. It allows you to apply early to up to 8 schools, and if you are “matched” you are admitted with a full scholarship. So you could choose Brown and a few others that would be suitable second choices.

As a 1st generation low income student you have a couple hooks in your favor, and truthfully your stats are not bad at all, they are just not great. But between the GPA and ACT I would not get my hopes up with Brown.

Can you re-take the ACT? Have you been taking practice tests and consistently scoring higher than 27? I don’t know much about the ACT but it looks like if you focused on improving Reading and Science you could get it up to a composite score of 29 or 30, which is realistically what you’d need to be seriously considered by Brown.

Also, more importantly, there are a lot of other great schools that you might like just as much as Brown. It’s ok to focus your efforts on your dream school, but educate yourself about more than just the Ivy League. Vassar is a Questbridge school that is very strong in the sciences and has neuroscience program and I think has a similar feel to Brown (aside from location).
