I'm a rising senior from Wisconsin. White male from about 60k family income. Gpa is 3.89 unweighted. 4.02 weighted. Currently #2 in my class of 65, but I may fall to #3. (Valedictorian has a solid chance at HYP) I don't have AP classes other than Calculus and European History. I go to a small Lutheran school so those are all I can do. I have as rigorous a schedule as I can. It's not 100% the most difficult possible but that's due to scheduling conflicts. I scored a 35 on my ACT.

I've played varsity football since my sophomore year, and am a captain this year. I was on our FIRST robotics team last year, and will continue to do that. I'm in NHS and am president of my schools chapter. I've been involved in student council years and am the student body treasurer. I was selected to participate in Badger Boys State.(American Legion leadership program. Don't know how much weight this carries) I also work 20 hours a week during school if that matters.Full time in the summer.

What are my chances at Rice? I plan on majoring in engineering or computer science. UW Madison, UM Twin Cities, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, and Washington in St. Louis are my other top schools.

Your chance is you have a chance! That’s the best that can really be said for anyone. You’re certainly a qualified applicant. The most important thing you can do now is make sure your essays are as good as possible! If you want to know more about that you can post here or make a new question for more potential exposure.

To answer some of the other stuff you seemed uncertain about:
- Rice will not fault you for lack of AP classes if you let them know there weren’t more offered.
- they would very much like to know that you worked 20 hrs/week
- if you just say you were selected for badger boys state, it won’t do you much good. Focus on why you got selected and what responsibilities or experiences that entailed

I listed my job and badger boys state on the common app. There isnt much room to elaborate on it though.

Hope things work out well for you. Rice is an amazing place, extremely welcoming, friendly (which is not necessarily expected - considering how competitive the incoming students are), and has excellent undergraduate engineering programs. If you haven’t visited it yet, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Your great ACT score should help balance some of the lack of AP, especially if your other objective data (subject test scores etc.) are good, and with a tough work schedule too …

I’m sorry, I had already forgotten the format of the common app! If there is nowhere for you to elaborate then I’m sure it will be fine :)

Your stats put you in range to get in. Regarding the lack of APs, your GC should be able to explain that you took the most rigorous curriculum that you could, given the offerings of the school.

Good luck.
