My family really wants me to go to Penn State because my sister just started her freshman year for Biochemistry. Basically this is my top school on my college list and I want to go for Biology (BS) with a Pre-med track. I paid for the app and sent scores on 9/27/14; guidance counselor sent HS transcript on Oct. 1st and my PSU profile says they've received everything needed.

GPA: 3.56 UW/W
SAT: 1660 (500R 590M 570W) (recently retook it I'm certain I got into 1700s which probably still isn't good enough).

I've taken 2 AP classes (currently taking 3...5 in total), 3 Honors classes, 4 college classes.

Senior Year Classes
AP Biology
AP Literature
AP Government
College Spanish 5
College Algebra
College Trigonometry

EC Activities:
Interact Club (10-12) (Community Service Club)
Red Cross Club (11-12) (Community Service Club)
Tutoring at Elementary School for ESL (English as a Second Language) (10-12)
Volunteer at Mulberry House Senior Center (53 Hours)
Varsity Winter Track (9-12)
Varsity Spring Track (9-12)
Sales Associate at American Eagle (August 2014-)

I'm aware that Penn State doesn't really care too much about ECs but I added it on my app anyways.
I put my intended major as Biology (BS) but my sister told me I should of put Undecided for a better chance... I also asked for consideration to the summer program if I'm not accepted to fall session.

You are probably good for summer admission, but if they do come back and deny you, make sure to change your intended major to DUS and ask to be reconsidered. Many people get admitted after a denial by doing just that!
Good luck!

From my research through the forums and Google, DUS stands for Division of Undergraduate Studies. Basically it’s Undecided and is a less competitive academic college at Penn State.

Yes that’s correct. DUS is basically undecided. People who are applying to engineering and competitive business majors have higher entrance requirements. So if they get rejected for admission directly to that major, they can request entrance to DUS instead or request to be considered for summer admission, or both. Sometimes that works if your stats are close. Other times they may tell you you need to go to a branch campus instead.

@dfrivas 1720 is better than 1660! I still think it’s enough for summer admission at least. The scores all being posted now with acceptances can seem really intimidating because they are the top scores. That’s probably why they are finding out now. The middle 50% at PSU UP starts at a 3.5 for FALL, so you are in the running. Good luck!

@charlesluljy Are you an international student? If you are and have bad “reading and writing” scores, why don’t you take TOEIC?

@dfrivas Your SAT score seems low for Penn State main. I highly suggest you consider going to other branch campuses and doing 2+2 transfer. Most students (approximately 50%) start from branch campuses and finish their degrees at Main. I understand that PSU is your top school, but have you seriously considered going to other schools? There are plenty of schools that are just as good as PSU and offer good education.

@jlhpsu since you chance everybody for psu can you chance me
international student from india
do not need any aid (will this improve my chances)
applying to smeal only
sat:1810(superscore)
gpa:average for 9t,10th,11th,12th is 80% which is good in india but i dont know how to calculate it to us gpa. i think it will be like 3.6 or 3.7 or

psu is my first choice do i have a shot

@ind1900 I’m not really sure if admissions are different for international students. That’s not something that I’ve had experience with. That being said, I can tell you that Penn State does NOT superscore. So it may depend on what your SAT score is in one sitting. You can apply undecided for the best chance, and if you are able, check off that you’d be willing to start in the summer. I’m not sure if that is possible for you since you are international. They do have later priority deadlines for International students, so you still have plenty of time for that. Again, I don’t really know about international admissions. But I do know PSU does not superscore tests.

@jihpsu my sat score from a single sitting is 1800 not a big difference and some people told me that if you’re international and dont need aid they give more preference. And i’m interested only in smeal if i dont get in i probably wont attend Penn State. atleast do you think i have more than 50% chance of getting

@ind1900 I really don’t know. Penn States official position is that location does not matter in admissions decisions and they notoriously also don’t give much aid. I do think you have a good chance of getting in, in general, to PSU main csmpus. I am unsure about smeal averge applicant stats however. Maybe someone from smeal can answer that. You can also check out the common data set for psu to see what they consider. Error Page;

@jihpsu thanks a lot and are you a penn state student and one more thing the website you posted is showing a different 25th to 75th percentile than the one in the psu webstie

@ind1900 I am a PSU alumni as is my husband, and my daughter is a current applicant. The PSU common data set lists the average applicant last year. The middle 50% is different than the average applicant. Penn state publishes both the average applicant and also the middle 50%.
