I want to go into medicine and I am completely committed to becoming a doctor.
I am looking at Emory, Northwestern, Penn State and Mercer type schools.
Do you have any other suggestions of schools or medical programs BS/MD I should look at?
Finally, I am especially concerned because I have one C in AP Chemistry which is a B weighted, but C
unweighted. Let me know what you all think! Thank you so much!

BS/MD programs are the most competitive undergrad programs that there are.
Your GPA is way too low, coupled with a poor grade in a core course directly related to the program would indicate that these are out of reach for you.

If you are committed to study medicine. Go the the best undergrad school you can get into, get all A’s in the pre-med requirements and apply to med school under the conventional route (like the vast majority of medical students do).

A C unweighted in Chemistry will hurt you a lot applying premed. Your overall GPA isn’t horrible or anything but for any top 20 premed program its too low. The only school I know on your list well is Northwestern is a definite high reach. Hopefully if you want premed you have a strong history of doing well in your other science classes besides chemistry. Try to play on your strengths and do really well in potential subjects your want to major in first semester next year and you should still get in a decent program. Make sure to apply to a few good safeties as well. Good luck!

Here’s a hypothetical resume which I am representing for a lot of decent grade students in fairly strong schools, public and privare: tell me what you think the chances are for such a sample student. Only HS data shown till end senior 1st semester.
SAT: 2090-2190
ACT: 30-32
GPA: 4.1

APs: Human Geog, Gov &Pol, APUSH, Euro, Eng 11, Eng 12, Bio, Enviro
Other subjects: Freshman Eng, Accelerated English, Freshman Bio, Chem, Econ/Geog, Algebra II, Geom, College Algebra, Discrete math., senior Year pre-calc, Video programming, Musical theatre, Creative writing, and French 1,2, and 3.

Awards: National& State-level French Exam ranks, French Film-making (1st prize), High Honor Roll from 9-11 grades so far every year, faculty recognition award, National French and English Honor Societies

Extra Curricular: NSLC, Nomination to NSHSS, Global Forum and Cultural Awareness, Model UN, Piano, Sanskrit scripture recitation.

Community Service: Animal shelter, autistic kids writing camp, downtown beautification, memory care and high dependency unit volunteering at a local retirement community, 100+ hours by this summer end

Here’s a hypothetical resume which I am representing for a lot of decent grade students in fairly strong schools, public and private: tell me what you think the chances are for such a sample student (scores imaginary, GPA imaginary). Only HS data shown till end senior 1st semester. No Ivy League dreams here. Just looking for some good, strong programs, science related.

SAT: 2090-2190

Sports: tennis, swimming (not competitive)

Also add membership to National Beta Club, French Club, Anti-defamation league, Key Club, and Drama club to the above resume.

@AustenFan7 When you start getting into hypothetical resumes it’s gets really hard to judge. Also you have a weighted instead of unweighted GPA which makes it even harder to judge (because weighted grades tend to differ a LOT by school). Speaking generically, a ACT of 30 to 33+ is ok for most top schools (obviously the higher ACT the better). Having super strong ECs is great, but also it should be stuff you care about (ie being in a few clubs you like rather than 50 to buff up your resume). Colleges also care less about ECs if you don’t have decent grades to match-- ideally as close to all As as possible with only a few Bs or lower mixed in is best. You also want to have at least a few APs mixed in your schedule for Junior and senior year. Also I don’t really see benefits your comment benefits the original poster. If your curious about your chances with a resume (or even hypothetical but you don’t want to say) start your own thread And ppl would be glad to give you feedback.

Thanks for your feedback! I won’t have my final grades till after school closes, but I would probably find myself in a pool very similar to the one I have talked about in this thread (my unweighted GPA is likely to be really close to 4.0). The subjects are all mine. Note that I will have finished 8 APs at the end of my senior year! Is that a decent number? I go to a very tough and competitive private school where teachers are very hard on the kids. I am looking for strong, middle grade schools, knowing Ivy Leagues and Public Ivies are super choosy. And yes, I will take your advice after my final grades are in. Sorry, I jumped in here.

How is your unweighted GPA going to go from a 3.5 to a 4.0 in a year? I’m pretty sure that’s not mathematically possible.

Sorry for the confusion. I am a different person than the original poster. Note that the hypothetical GPA I have posted is W 4.2.

Don’t steal others thread. Start your own.
For OP, your uwGPA is very low for the top schools you are looking at. Do you know your class rank? If so, are you within the top 10%.

Didn’t mean to steal anyone’s thread. It was a mistake since I am a new member. Takes a little time getting used to the protocol. I do apologize to the person who started this thread. It’s all yours. Just ignore me.

Mercer University in Macon, GA might work for you. Fairly decent med. school. Good medical center too. Recently bought over by Navicent.

@AustenFan7 8 APs is a fine number for most schools I wouldn’t worry about not having had taken enough, especially since with your GPA you’ve done fairly well in them. And even though you don’t want Ivys with those potential stats you could probably have a shot at a lot of good top 20 schools if you apply.

Thanks, so much! I really appreciate your feedback. I will keep some of those top 20 in my list.
