Chance Me!!!

This is just for fun because I’m genuinely curious what people think! Especially because my family has no idea about anything college-wise and I’m the eldest child…

State: CA

Ethnicity: White

SAT II: Literature (750), US History (680 bleh…I’m obviously an English person, and there’s only one English subject test, but I just retook this and am waiting for my score)…WHY OH WHY ARE MOST OF THE SUBJECT TESTS LANGUAGE OR STEM RELATED

Couple of awards: AP Scholar w/Distinction (missed National by a point!), national poetry award, published a few times, district music composition award, CSF Gold Seal Bearer, English/National/Spanish Honor Societies, Scholar Athlete, National Merit Commended, etc.

Hooks: obvious focus on intended major, obvious strength in intended major, obvious love of intended major (haha), I’m counted as white on the application but I’m 100% of a strange ethnicity which I emphasized (not revealing as to not reveal identity), nonprofit?, most of my activities all are focused on the same types of things (enviro, english, music, service), school recognized as high achieving nationally, English at a STEM focused school

Weaknesses: US History subject test (I took the ACT to kinda make up for it), at extremely competitive school where tons of kids apply to top schools

Letters of Rec:
AP English teacher (100000000000/10, she’s like a mother to me+had her two years in a row+advisor of LitMag
AP Enviro Teacher (9/10, had her for two years in a row, advisor for Enviro club)
Counselor: 10/10, she loves me and has always been impressed by my ability to persevere , during our last meeting she literally listed all the things I’ve done and asked what more colleges could ask for

Common App Essay: 10/10, best thing I’ve ever written, shows genuine love for English and is “written like Hemingway himself could have done it”-my AP English teacher, my AP English teacher started crying over it and said it completely represented me (also, the topic isn’t even sad lol)

Schools applying to: Yale SCEA (my dream for the last two years, you can probably tell from my user), Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Duke, Rice, Vanderbilt, Brown, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Stanford, UPenn, USC, Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UC Irvine, UCSB (I have a UC guaranteed bc top achieving CA resident)

My family never had any clue about college admissions so I was encouraged to apply around. Since I’m an English major and I love writing, I actually have found the college application process quite fun! Woohoo supplements! And every school I’m applying to has fantastic programs, I’m grateful for the opportunity to apply to any of them

Thanks in advance for your time!

Every Ivy is a reach, there are so many top-notch candidates like you, but one could clearly come through. I’d guess you’d get into at least 10 of these schools. What you want to do with your English degree might help you choose the school to attend.

Yale SCEA Reach your extras are really impressive and If your ECs are good enough, you will have good chance
Harvard reach
Princeton reach
Columbia reach
Duke match
Rice match
Vanderbilt match
Brown match
Dartmouth match
Northwestern match
Stanford, reach
UPenn reach
, USC,match
Berkeley match
, UCLA, reach
UCSD, safety
UC Irvine safety
, UCSB safety

I think you have a decent chance for yale but your test scores are average. Good luck!

You might get rejected from almost all your private schools. They are that competitive.

You will have some UC acceptances.

Are you happy with that? If not, maybe you should remove some of the reaches and add in schools you like and can get into.

Your chances are very good at Rice.

You forgot to mention your family’s ability to pay for your education. Do you have any need for financial aid, or is your family full pay? If you have any budget constraints your list of schools may change.

Thanks everyone! In response to some of the questions above: My family is able to pay in full actually. We aren’t super well off but my dad has been saving for years. My parents have given me the freedom to apply to and attend any school, which I know I’m lucky to have. My UC GPA is about a 4.6. And I know I might not get into a lot of privates, but it would only take me getting into one super good one for me to be unbelievably happy. As long as I get into some good school, that’s enough for me. So I don’t think lowering my amount of reaches would help anything. I am guaranteed a UC so I’ll definitely get in somewhere.

Omg do I hope so! That school is everything to me<3

The ELC guarantee only guarantees UC Merced, so not your choice college.

UCB/UCLA: Match-High Match
USC/UCSD: Match
UCSB: Low Match
UCI: Low Match-Safety

I know  I’m mostly just saying it because I didn’t apply to many safeties because of it since I at least know I can get in somewhere. I’m pretty sure I’ll get in somewhere out of my 18 regardless…I hope…!

Good Luck and yes I am sure you will plenty of schools to choose from in the Spring.

Thank you so much!

I think you have a great chance, are you applying regular decision for all of them?

All of them except Yale. I applied single choice early action!

Your extras look are slightly conventional, however your stats are powerful. There a lot of factors out of your control that will play themselves out in an Ivy admissions room… Here are my predictions:

Yale DEFER/WAITLIST
Harvard REJECT
Princeton REJECT
Columbia WAITLIST
Duke WAITLIST/ACCEPT
Rice ACCEPT
Vanderbilt WAITLIST/ACCEPT
Brown REJECT
Dartmouth WAITLIST
Northwestern ACCEPT
Stanford, REJECT
UPenn REJECT
USC ACCEPT
Berkeley ACCEPT
UCLA, ACCEPT
UCSD, ACCEPT
UC Irvine ACCEPT
UCSB ACCEPT

Thanks! Though I must say, I hope you’re wrong about Yale

@yalehopeful017 You have everything Yale wants, although given the unpredictability of their admissions, I wouldn’t want to give you false hopes. Don’t get me wrong – You are exactly the type of student that does get accepted

Haha, all good! I always appreciate honesty.
