Chance me?

I’m applying to both campuses RD, even though I don’t think my chances of getting into Emory University are very high…

I got a D in my dual enrollment trig class and tried to explain and show what I learned from it in the Common App’s additional info section, but I’m sure it’ll still be a blow to my application.

Rejected unless you had great essays

The ACT is higher than the Emory average. Your grades are slightly lower. Any sports or part-time jobs?

It might help your chances if you applied ED. It would show motivation. Good luck.

@ljberkow : For admits, that 31 is maybe slightly below the median of admits (in fact, last year it was the bottom quartile mark), and is at the average (which is below the median at Emory I think) for matriculates, so it is pretty strong but not above average as the 31 corresponds to 1360-1390 and Emory’s average SAT is like 1360-1380 for matriculates depending on the year (stats have pretty much hovered between 1360-1370 lately though). Emory usually admits at more like 1420 something (meaning they hoped for higher scores, but this is the case at most schools, elite or not).

@bernie12, according to college data tracker (not sure where they get their information), average weighted gpa is 4.19, average unweighted is 3.74, average act is 31, and SAT is 1332. http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg01_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=1039

I think jubilant’s stats put her in the mix. My original comment was in response to the first response of “rejection”.

@ljberkow : That is for students who applied (in fact it said interested, so these folks may not have even applied) AND put their data on that website. That DOES NOT reflect who was admitted and who enrolled at Emory.

If you use that as the sample, then it will be skewed downward, if CC had such a thing, it would be skewed upward dramatically. Emory did the counting and provided this information for enrolled students and admitted students:

Enrolled Students: http://opb.emory.edu/documents/data/Emory-AcademicProfile-2015-2016.pdf (this is in agreement with the “qualifications of enrolled freshmen” on the left panel of the website…it comes out to 1365 M/V) and the 31 is exactly average for a matriculate and not above.
Admitted students: http://apply.emory.edu/discover/fastfacts.php (again, this makes sense, non-HYPM schools admit higher and enroll lower). The 31 is bottom 25% for an admit of course suggesting that maybe like 60% have 32 and higher who are admitted.

The person is more like an average matriculate, but Emory aims higher when admitting meaning that it will be more random for the OP than some who is actually even above the admitted student profile. They are the average student who would come to Emory after the smoke clears.

Excuse me, 31 is still the 25% “mark” for admits, meaning it is still in the IQR, but suggesting maybe like 60% or more could have higher. OP should have very strong rec. letters, ECs, and essays to increase their odds.

There are so many candidates in such close ranges that other factors come into play. I never said OP was a lock, just that she is not rejected out of hand. She has a shot. It’s hard to tell from raw data posted whether she has any leadership positions or plays any sports. There are many factors they’re looking at beyond the four corners of the application.

I have reason to believe that Emory pretty much takes everyone 1200 M/V and up very seriously for admission and then consider other things. I was just making the point that the stats are not what would make OP particularly competitive, it would be other things. I really don’t consider someone’s stats an advantage unless they are above the top quartile mark of the previous year’s admits. For all others it is more like : “Ok, what else do you have?”. The only thing I am very iffy on is the GPA or maybe GPA-classrank correspondence. Again, Emory appears to like students from “harder” schools GPA wise and seems to be more punitive toward those with a lower than IQR GPA than the SAT especially in cases where the rigor of curriculum was not anything that stands out. They have a very good shot if they are super solid in other areas. I am guessing they just gave us a little taste of what they did EC wise.

@ljberkow
@bernie12
I played lacrosse, but didn’t put report that to my schools since it was only for one season. I have one leadership position, which is National Beta Club Secretary. Most of my ECs are volunteer organizations/programs, hence the 300+ hours. No jobs, etc. My recs should be great-- one from my English teacher who notoriously writes good recommendations and one from my math teacher who I’ve known for 4 years. My personal statement was nothing special, although I think my supplement was fine. My school is arguably the most competitive in my county and we send around 5 students to Emory every year (the main campus is less than 10 miles from my high school).
My ACT score is, unfortunately, in the 25th percentile based on the admitted 2020 students. For Oxford campus, it’s in the 50% range.
Overall, I’m aware that my application is pretty mediocre, so I’m not expecting much. My ED II school’s acceptance rate is a bit higher and I’ve shown a lot of interest, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see what happens.

@jubilant56 : Then just hope you get into your ED2 school then! Either way, you have a shot and it may be bigger since Emory has been able to yield students from your school before

@bernie12 Thanks for chancing me :slight_smile:
