Chance Me

I’m really anxious about my results…but for good reason!
I got really cocky about applying to colleges and now I think I will be rejected by all of them. So to get this off my chest: Destroy my resume. Chance me:

SAT: 1440/1600 (superscored, also I have one more coming in two days that will be sent to MIT, Johns Hopkins, UPenn)
Essay: 7/6/7 (20/24)
ACT: 32 (35 Math, 35 English, 29 Reading, 29 Science)
SATII: 800 Math IIC, 800 Chemistry
[I hate standardized tests]
GPA: 4.1/4.0 (School does it differently than others, and I’m pretty sure I have the highest GPA in my school)
APs: 5 Calc AB (self-studied), 4 English Lang. & Comp., 4 Chemistry
Awards: Letter in Cross Country and Robotics, AP Scholar, National Spanish Exam (Silver all years; competed in outside experience my junior year and got 2nd in the state), National Hispanic Recognition Program, a math award (10th place in Algebra II…most colleges don’t know about this however since I didn’t “win” it), Chemistry Field Day 1st place (10th, 11th)

Senior Course Load:
European History
Honors Organic Chemistry (w/ lab)
A religion class
Honors Spanish IV (can double as AP Spanish)
AP English Lit. & Comp.
AP Biology (w/ Lab)
Honors Calculus III (can double as AP Calc BC [that was 1st semester…now we are in multi variable calc])

Extracurricular:
Cross Country (9th-12th), Robotics (9th-11th), Sophomore Class President, volunteer work through my parish (Chief Squire of the Columbian Squires…lol) (9th-12th), NHS (10th-12th), Tutor (11th-12th), ran track (10th-12th), soccer (9th)
Lots of volunteer hours from these

Work:
Mowed grass (9th-10th) in the summer, work study at school, job at a hotel last summer

Essays:
Common App was about cross country and how it helped me in life (I realize now that writing an essay about this was a bad idea, but I think the essay describes who I am as a person)
Other supplemental essays were okay, but then again I could be critical of myself.

Demographics:
Hispanic/White, $150,000 income, military dad, mom has a job, from NE

I realize that I should have done more in my summers, but I couldn’t find any internships locally and none of the teachers informed the students about potential openings. If there were more STEM activities/competitions, I would have tackled the opportunity and competed in it. However, due to the lack of opportunities I can’t display a strong spike in STEM. Personally, I don’t find Nebraska an appealing place to build up my resume, but now I’m stuck with these stats.

Plan on majoring in Chemical and Biological Engineering

Now, the fun part:
Schools I applied to are (all RD):
MIT
Johns Hopkins University
UPenn
Georgia Tech
Vanderbilt (I had a great uncle that went there/family is from Tennessee)
Berkeley (I doubt I can get in, since I didn’t take a year of art and I sent my 1410 SAT, which is lower than their average)
Northwestern

Chance me

Your awards and GPA stand out, but your SAT is way below average for all these schools.
I think almost all of these schools are mid to high reaches for you, so I can’t see you getting accepted to any of them (MAYBE with the exception of georgia tech and vanderbilt(?) not really sure though).

Would you be able to chance me back? http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1962119-wesleyan-haverford-swarthmore-uchicago-p1.html

Honestly the low test scores are going to hurt you pretty bad.

Your lack of AP (only 3 by the time of Senior year) is probably another big downside (unless your school doesn’t offer many AP’s).

Even if you rejected by all of them, there is nothing to do except move on with life.

GL wherever you are going

New SAT score is a super scored 1470 (690 Reading/Writing, 780 Math). Sent to Upenn, MIT, Johns Hopkins, and Vanderbilt (although they said their last acceptable submission was December, it says online that they processed the January one)

Chance me

Your SAT II scores are so high that they should help with judging your regular SAT scores. With that said, if you live in California, you probably will get in Berkeley, there’s a good chance you will be accepted to Vanderbilt, but it does seem like there’s a small chance you’ll be rejected by all of them…so if I’m you I would apply to a real late deadline university like University of Arizona or something just have a school to attend, then transfer the following year.

I am out of state for Berkeley, and I have already ruled out that school since I haven’t taken a year of art (I instead opted to take the two hardest science classes at my school) and my test scores are too low to compensate. For all those who chance me, don’t really consider Berkeley as a viable option.

Stats (so far):

Accepted: Northwestern University
Waitlisted: Georgia Tech, MIT :)))))))))))))))
Rejected: JHU

Don’t give up on your dreams, especially when the whole world has turned its back against you!

@agent197 Your application might be very interesting from what I gather. It is the unique way you highlight your values in your application that makes you stand out. These colleges look for good fits. You bring some more diversity to their class! Congrats on Northwestern and the MIT waitlist. I got rejected at MIT :frowning: Good going! You are to get into Vanderbilt too, I think. Same for Berkeley and probably a rejection/waitlist at Penn, but that isn’t bad at all!

THE RESULTS ARE IN

Accepted: Cal and Northwestern
Waitlisted: Vanderbilt, MIT, GIT
Rejected: UPenn, JHU

Based on the decisions, I have decided to attend the University of California - Berkeley (unless MIT changes its decision). California, here I come baby!!!

A MUCH better result than I would have ever hoped for. All the countless hours spent reading forums and other “Chance Me” threads resulted in unwanted and unnecessary stress and anxiety. To all those who are awaiting college decisions or who are beginning their college process, I wish you the best of luck. Don’t read others’ chance posts and become discouraged at their successes; rather, be proud of your own accomplishments. Make yourself shine through the essays and explore who you true passions. If you have worked hard throughout your high school career, your efforts will surely pay off!

As for chance threads, it would be wrong to say I enjoyed reading most of them. Even posting a chance thread was highly unnecessary, as complete strangers aren’t the admissions committee and they cannot gauge an accurate result. Seriously, to all those stressed seniors: Enjoy your final year. Although the first semester seems rough, the second semester leaves you with nostalgia and bittersweet moments. I can honestly say that I will miss being in high school so much. But, like most things in life, it has to come to an end :frowning:

And with this, I end my time on College Confidential. Time to begin the college life
