Chance Me

I’m not someone who has perfect scores and is asking what there chances are at Harvard. However I do want to get into some fairly competitive colleges and want to know what my chances are and if there is a chance that I receive some merit. Some of the colleges I listed are safeties but Wake Forest is my dream school and I know it is a huge stretch.

GPA - 3.40 UW 4.0 W
4 AP classes and 5 IB classes
ACT 29 (going to retake it and think I can get a 31)
EC’s
3 year varsity cross country (Sophomore-Senior)
Freshman soccer
3 years of spring track (1 year varsity)(Sophomore-Senior)
150 hours of tutoring for younger kids
Worked at local camp for 4 weeks over the summer (Freshman & Sophomore year)
Refereed local recreational soccer games over the fall (Freshman-Senior)
IB certificate program
CPR certified
EMT

Loyola Maryland (EA)
American University (EA)
Elon (EA)
Christopher Newport University (EA)
Quinnipiac University (EA)
High Point (EA)
University of Richmond (ED II)
Wake Forest (ED)

I know Wake Forest is a big stretch even with an early decision, but do you think I could get into any of these schools an possibly some merit scholarship?

Also I live in the North East and want to major in political science or something like that.

bump

I don’t think you can get any merit scholarships from Richmond. I am not sure if you will get in tbh.

You’re ECs are good (though need leadership roles), but that GPA is really, really low. I think the average GPA for Richmond this year was like a 4.2 or something. I think that you’re act could make up for that though.

Also, I didn’t know that you could EA or ED so many colleges? Is that really possible. I don’t think you can ED more than one, though EA might work differently.

Try to get some safety schools in there. Colleges are only seeming to get more competitive.

Good luck!

Edit:

I missed that that said CNU. Yeah, I’m sure you’ll get into there and get honors! That’s a good safety.

High Point would be a pretty safe bet and Elon would be a match. CNU would be nice as well. Be sure to research all of the private schools and see if they really are worth your contributions; I understand the feel you’re looking for, and you can get it from some public schools at a similar price in their honors college. Also, of note, I would be willing to bet money that if you applied to American ED (which I’m sure you think is a tough reach), you’ll likely get in; it’s just the “what could have been” that will kill you.

Anyways, to your two, quite similar high reaches; Richmond and Wake Forest . . . they will be reaches. Merit aid is completely out of the window; you’ll likely have to be at least in the top 80% of the class to get it. Your GPA is uncomfortably low, and the ACT is concerning as well; I’d say a 30 at minimum would get you in the door if you don’t have some amazing/appealing attributes (which you have not mentioned yet).

Also, as noted, see the criteria for applying early; some of the ones you listed are likely restricting. Do some more research, and best of luck.

@TheYellowBiscuit for Richmond and Wake Forest I was more asking if there was a chance I could get in, and for the other schools if there was a chance for merit scholarship. Sorry that was poorly worded. However, University of Richmond offers an ED II where I could apply to Wake Fost ED and if I didn’t get in I could then apply ED to Richmond. I am well aware hose two colleges are going to be big reachesbut I was wondering if there was a chance that I could get in. Thanks

I’m also applying to Loyola Maryland as a safety! If money is an important factor for you (like it is for me), consider the Knott Scholarship. It’s completely academics-based and if you change that 29 to a 31, I’m sure you could get some money from them.

@strikers10 I see what you are saying and that’s good idea if Richmond is definitely your second choice school.

I feel like there is a chance; however, it is very small (but that doesn’t mean you won’t get in) for Richmond. You’re GPA is lower than most people I know that applied and got in (my GPA was a 3.9 UW/ 4.5-6W), you don’t have any leaderships roles, and when I look at stats you’re ACT is at or slightly below what Richmond wants. That’s why I don’t think you will get in.

That said, I’d still apply. Last year, I didn’t think I would get in and got in without using ED to help my chances.

I had a 25 ACT (way lower than the average); however had an above average GPA, many leadership roles, took nearly all the AP classes my school offered, I’m a minority, and had some honors that I knew they liked (Girls’ State participant). I thought my ACT did me in, but it wasn’t even a problem with all the other things considered (that’s what I love about Richmond: it is holistic).

A girl at my school (who is not a person of color) got in ( again, not using ED to boost chances) with maybe less then four clubs (no leadership), took less than four or four AP classes, around upper 20’s/30 ACT, a high/ average GPA for Richmond (but quite a bit lower than mine, around the 4.2-3 area if I remember) and one job. She didn’t have any distinct awards that I was aware of (meaning they were not through my school or on such a high level to be recognized).

On the other hand, I talked with a person who was waitlisted who took like 17 some AP classes, was in clubs, etc.

The UR waitlist thread has people with really high ACT and SAT scores who were waitlisted and DID NOT get off. UR said last admission season was the most brutal (people telling me they dipped below 30 percent acceptance) UR has ever had.

So there is always a bit of chance, but I wouldn’t bank on getting into UR. Of course, I hope it works out for you and that you still apply.

Hope that helps you!
