I’ an international student and I’m hoping to apply to: Northwestern, NYU, Cornell, Yale, UIUC, Purdue, Georgia Tech, UCB, and UCLA. I plan on applying for financial aid at NU, NYU, Cornell, and Yale.
My intended major: electrical or mechanical engineering
SAT I: 1390 (640 R+W, 750 Math)
SAT II: Taking in November --> Predicting 780-800 Math, and 700-750 Physics
GPA: 4.146/4 (Weighted)
AP: (Not sure if they actually look at this during admissions) Score of 3 for AP Bio, Calc AB, and lang and comp.
IB: Currently doing it, Math HL (Predicted 6), Physics HL (Predicted 5-6), Econ HL (7), SL Lang and Lit (7), SL Spanish (Predicted N/A right now) SL chemistry (5-6)
ACT: None
Rank: N/A
EC: Quite a lot, ranging from football, volleyball, and badminton sports teams (and captain in one), MUN Vice Pres, Debate captain, and founder of dog club, robotics club member. A few debating awards, both national and one international.
Common App Essay: Decent? Talked about a slight tragedy in my life, and how that changed me for the better.
Teacher Reccs: Not sure, but I took it from teachers who really like me. I’m pretty sure they’re pretty good.
Calculate your UC GPA capped weighted and fully weighted: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
SAT is on the low side for UCB Engineering. LOR’s are by invitation only.
Your SAT is low for UCB engineering.
There is a cap on non-residents.
Can you afford UCB?
Thank you for the replies. UCB is on the more expensive side, however I have been told that my relatives will pitch in if I get into UCB, or any of the schools that dont offer financial aid for international students. Seeing as my SAT is on the low side for engineering, what are my chances for getting in? My UC Capped Weighted GPA according to that website is 4.05, and my fully weighted GPA according to that website is 4.13, while my unweighted is 3.91. Does this somewhat help me for admissions even though my SAT is on the lower side? Would taking the december 2nd SAT be helpful, or would the scores not be sent in time since the UC campuses have a deadline of december 31st for scores.
UCB should be considered a Reach school especially for Engineering and being international.
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 (capped weighted) and not major specific. You want to be at or above the stat averages for a decent chance.
Make sure you apply widely to a number of schools.
UCB: 14%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 44%
UCSB: 54%
UCD: 58%
UCI: 65%
UCSC: 85%
UCR: 94%
UCM: 96%
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT:
UCB: 1280-1490
UCLA: 1280-1500
UCSD: 1250-1470
UCSB: 1290-1450
UCD: 1190-1430
UCI: 1190-1420
UCSC: 1170-1380
UCR: 1090-1310
UCM: 1020-1230
I see, thank you for this information. UCB and UCLA were both my reach schools, of course including my other reach schools such as Cornell, Yale, NU, etc. How are my chances at other universities mentioned in the question I first asked? Are my admission chances decent for UIUC, Purdue, or GA Tech? And if I’m applying for financial aid, how would my chances be for admission in NYU, NU, or even Cornell and Yale (these last two unis would be a dream come true)? Thanks
I will defer to other CC posters in regards to the other schools. I do not feel qualified to answer any questions on schools other than the UC’s or Cal States.
Alright, thank you for your help
