Chance Me

Please chance my hypothetical app a year from now (I am a Junior this year)

I’m interested in studying math and maybe physics and maybe philosophy.

UW GPA: 3.91
W GPA: 4.40
SAT I: 1570 - 800 Math + 770 Verbal
ACT: 35
SAT II: Math 2: 800 Physics: 800

Calc AB (5) - taken Freshman year, Calc BC (5) -taken sophomore year, Lang (5), World History (4), US History (5), Chemistry (4), Statistics (5), Computer Science A (5), Physics I (5),

Senior year I plan on taking AP Macro/Micro Econ, AP US/Comparative Gov, AP Lit, Physics C (both) and probably courses at a University (I’ve taken most AP’s at my school)

ECs:
Math Club - Team Member (5 years)
NHS - Member (2 years) /VP (1 year)
Film Club (2 years member, 1 year president)
FRC Team - Programmer (2 years)
Vex Robotics Team (Founding member) - Programmer (3 years) / Drive Team (2 years)
Academic Decathlon - (10th grade only. Youngest member and the teacher left after)
CIT at a summer camp (Summer before 11th grade)

Qualified for AIME in Junior Year.

Research internship at local university over the summer where I and a staff member do research in astronomy and physics- hopefully get a letter of rec from him.

I’m play the drums in a band and also paint sometimes (maybe supplement). I jumped up in math along with a friend in Freshman year (looks good?) and also I’m planning on self-studying multivar calc and linear algebra. I’ve also taken online courses in math, game theory, and philosophy.

I know 2 teachers that will give me great letters of recommendation (math and history) but I don’t really know my college counselor yet.

Not really any hooks other than my parents are South African and I speak in an accent at home.

Schools are:
UChicago (Favorite)
Rice
UC Berkely
Pomona
Carleton
Williams
Yale
Northwestern

Very impressive resume!

I think you have a fair shot for each of these schools, I would say the to gain some more leadership positions and try to make sure your essays are stellar and unique and you have as good as a shot as anyone. Just remember when it comes to Uchicagoit shighly selective so many beyond qualified kids get rejected.

@FriendlyBuddy, just curious, are you not considering Harvey Mudd? I ask because I see Pomona in your list and a lot of Physics/Math on your resume

@Smithfamily I am considering Harvey mudd but I prefer the liberal arts program that Pomona offers. I’m not really sure what kind of school I want to attend yet but you’ll probably notice that Williams and Carleton are on my list as opposed to mit and Caltech.

Your test scores and GPA are great, but your ECs could perhaps be a bit stronger. Do you think you have a chance of qualifying for USAMO or getting some research published before you apply?

@helpfulalum Usamo probably not but there’s a small chance I might get some work published this summer during my internship. I’m also going to bring academic decathlon to my school and basically run it next year so that probably looks nice for my ecs too.
