background info: the main reason my gpa is this low is because of my math classes. I got C’s in them and that really pulled my gpa down. All my other classes are A’s and B’s. My gpa would be a 3.7 without my math classes.

Duke and Cornell are high reaches. I would also put UChicago as a high reach but their admissions are kind of weird so you actually may have a decent chance there if you are quirky enough. If you aren’t in the top 10% of your class, it will be very difficult to get into them unless you have some kind of hook. What do you want to major in? That should help you decide on a school list.

You killed that SAT! Great job! Your list is good, but for schools like Cornell, Duke, etc., the GPA is too low and most of the applicants already have a near perfect SAT. If all else fails, Texas A&M and UT-Dallas are the safest bets. UT-Austin has a good chance, but still a reasonable chance of a decline. I would put in one or two safety schools in the list just to be safe. I recommend University of Houston and Texas Tech.

If you are looking UIUC and Indiana, I would add Purdue as a match for a psych major.

@coolguy40 Can you please explain why certain colleges were considered a waste of time. I understand Cornell and Duke. Chicago is a possibility. I have seen in many forums where people have got in with 3.4 and 3.5 GPA’s and strong essays. Haverford??

Usually students who get into to the top schools with lower GPAs have some kind of major hook - URM, athletics, national/international award.
