Chance me?

As Junior year comes to an end, I don’t think I’m in the place I want to be for college admissions. I messed up a bit and took Honors Physics (with an insanely hard teacher) and am ending with my first B-. I guess my biggest issue is whether they’ll look specifically at my science grades or just my gpa. I’d appreciate if you’d look through my stats and tell me whether I have a chance for BS/MD programs like Penn State, Baylor, Sidney Kimmell, Rutgers, George Washington, etc. etc.

Intended Major: Pre-Med / BS-MD program

STATS

  • State: CA
  • Sex: Female
  • Ethnicity/Race: Asian (Indian)
  • Type of School: public
  • GPA: Unweighted 3.91, Weighted 4.3ish
  • ACT Score: 35C (35 on math, 34 on science, 36 for reading and writing)
  • APs: AP Biology (4), AP World History (4) taking AP Computer Science, AP Calculus AB, and AP English Literature this year
  • Senior Year Courseload: Honors Anatomy and Physiology, AP Calculus BC, Sports Medicine (ROP Class), AP English Language, AP Spanish, AP Psychology, and Reg Gov/Econ (mandatory for my school)
  • Awards/Honors: Rising Star of school’s speech & debate impromptu event, various awards in tutoring, National Honor Society, Berkeley Invitational octafinalist for speech & debate, gen award in volunteering for library system

ECs

  • President and founder of Sankara Eye Foundation chapter: work with people all over the world to help fulfill our mission: will probably go on an internship abroad: have gotten shadowing opportunities through this
  • Secretary of tutoring club for disadvantaged students (where i got awards - can’t say name b/c it’s heavily local) (might be President next year)
  • Member of local Youth Advisory Council for government, also reelected for next year
    - tbh this is one of the BIGGEST things i’ve done, it’s pretty competitive & high-profile for my town
  • Volunteer at a local hospital
  • Member of NHS (potential officer - waiting on election results)
  • Member of CSF
  • Varsity member of Speech & Debate in Impromptu speaking & Prepared Speaking
  • Band member (part of actual band 6 years as a flautist, took this school year off b/c of oral surgeries, will be returning as a percussionist in the Winter Percussion Line)
  • Work at a local tutoring center where I teach math and sciences to kids

Summer Activities

  • Helped run a Speech & Debate summer camp for kids looking to improve speaking skills
  • Volunteered at the library
  • Perry Initiative Program
  • Internship at a local tutoring company (not the one I currently work at)
This may not seem like a lot, but I’ve been doing it consistently ever since I was a freshman (with exception of PIP). I’m also going to get direct medical experience in the field through SEF shadowing/volunteering and something tentative in the nursing field

Essays/LOR

  • One of them will be from my Honors Physics teacher who has given me my lowest grade thus far - I’m hoping a stellar recommendation from her will help negate my grade b/c I genuinely try in the class
  • The other will be from a teacher I’ve had for 3 years, respectively for Algebra 2, computer science class (ROP), and AP Computer Science
both should be great since they’ve written me letters of recommendation before

I’d greatly appreciate your help! sorry for long forum xx

For all of the schools that you listed the b- won’t hurt you. With your course rigor, test scores, and extra curriculars your chance of acceptance is high even with the pre med major and the b-.

Thank you k_k! Fortunately, my grade just went up to a B so my tensions have been reduced regarding that.

You should be safe at all the schools you listed, and even receive a scholarship at some.

@schuylarsister with acceptances rates of <1%, no BS/MD program is a safety…

OP, unfortunately this is even harder than all the ivy chance me’s. The people that apply for these programs are often near perfect applicants, and while you are definitely competitive, and don’t take this to heart, but you are by no means the best applicant to these programs, and could easily by rejected by all of them. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t have a chance: you certainly look like a lot of the other applicants, that is, qualified, but at the end of the day, its still really hard to get in.

@GeometryForLife TBH I’m not looking at being the best - being the best sets you up for overconfidence issues which can easily result in serious damage when you ultimately fail to be the best. It’s good that you think I’m competitive though!

EC update: President of the local tutoring club for next year, and Parliamentarian for my school’s NHS
